Summary
- Despite initial criticism, Avowed has become a critical and commercial success.
- Avowed peaks at over 17,000 players on the day of full release, making it a success for Obsidian.
- Avowed is the best-selling game on Steam in the United States.
Avowed marks an exciting debut in the realm of first-person fantasy RPGs from Obsidian Entertainment, a studio known for its roleplaying games. Previously uncharted territory for them, Avowed is drawing inspiration from the success of series like The Elder Scrolls.
The initial five-day early access for players who bought the premium edition of the game wasn’t met with much enthusiasm, and there was growing dissatisfaction about some role-playing aspects in Avowed. However, despite these negative feelings, Avowed has been well-received critically, boasting an average score of 82 on OpenCritic. Supporters of Avowed are pleased with the game, but they’ve been displeased by the negative opinions emerging from content creators and influencers. It’s worth mentioning that when it first launched, Avowed received “Very Positive” reviews on Steam, and this positive reception has continued after its official release.
After Avowed’s complete launch on February 18, it’s made a decent commercial debut. Even though it’s offered through Game Pass, Avowed drew in more than 17,000 simultaneous players on its release day, which is around 5,000 players above Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, another Game Pass game.
A Great Success
Based on a discussion on Reddit from Homemadeshock, Avowed is the top-selling game on Steam in the U.S., outperforming pre-orders for Monster Hunter Wilds and sales of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. This isn’t entirely unexpected since many gamers tend to buy a game when it first comes out, but it’s still worth mentioning.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice the striking similarity in peak player numbers between Avowed on Steam (17,000) and The Outer Worlds (20,300), one of Obsidian Entertainment’s biggest hits. Considering the vast number of players probably enjoying it through Game Pass and the latest Xbox consoles, it’s evident that Avowed is poised to be another commercial triumph for Obsidian. This is particularly impressive given that many games continue to sell well even after their initial release, thanks to extended sales periods.
In simpler terms, Obsidian is eager to duplicate their past achievements when they finally unveil The Outer Worlds 2 this year. A sneak peek was shown at the Game Awards event in December, but no particular launch date has been announced yet. It’s quite remarkable because Obsidian has been exceptionally busy lately, putting out as many as six games over the past four years, which is relatively fast for contemporary game development.
