Confirmed director Carrie Patel recently left renowned role-playing game studio Obsidian Entertainment, not long after the release of their latest title.
On her LinkedIn profile, Patel announced that she had started working for Night School Studios, a Netflix-affiliated company known for creating the Oxenfree series of interactive stories.
In a quick message, Patel announced that they have taken on the role of Game Director at Netflix Game Studio’s Night School studio!”
This version maintains the original meaning but is written in a more conversational and engaging manner.
Night School Studio is primarily recognized for its acclaimed Oxenfree series of video games, with Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals being the latest addition from 2023. This studio under Netflix’s ownership also debuted Thronglets, a spin-off of Black Mirror, earlier this year. Coincidentally, it experienced an undisclosed number of layoffs around the same period. Prior to that, Netflix closed down another one of its studios, which was developing a AAA game spearheaded by Halo veteran Joseph Staten.
For more than a decade, Patel gained extensive experience at the esteemed game development company, Obsidian Entertainment, where he held several key roles. During this period, he contributed significantly to projects like “The Outer Worlds,” an Xbox sci-fi RPG, and the popular “Pillars of Eternity” series.
Lately, Patel assumed control over the direction of Avowed following its reboot during the early stages of development. Originally, Avowed was intended to have a dark fantasy landscape similar to The Elder Scrolls, featuring one vast open world and cooperative multiplayer.
In the end, Patel successfully directed the development to unveil a more vibrant and distinct gameplay experience. It now offers numerous expansive maps for exploration, and it’s designed specifically for solo players.
Generally, the feedback on Avowed was favorable, and at first, discussions revolved around the franchise’s potential growth, potentially through extensions, a complete sequel, or a combination of both. However, it appears that Patel will no longer be involved in shaping this future.
Last week, a clearly stated plan for future updates was unveiled, outlining numerous small enhancements that will be provided at no cost within the next six months. These improvements include the addition of a Photo Mode feature and a New Game Plus option.
“With awesome worldbuilding and stellar character writing, Avowed reminds me why I fell in love with Obsidian’s RPGs in the first place,” reads iggn.ru‘s Avowed review. “However, the bigger picture is that it plays it quite safe, with a by-the-numbers fantasy adventure that’s more familiar than evolutionary.”
In June’s Xbox Games Showcase, we’re excited to reveal more details about our upcoming game, The Outer Worlds 2, from Obsidian Entertainment.
