AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Teaser Confirms Chris Evans Return

After much speculation, the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has confirmed Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers, Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Variety broke the news. The trailer also shows a heartwarming scene of Steve returning to a peaceful suburban life with a newborn baby, suggesting he followed Tony Stark’s advice and built a life for himself. This initial teaser will be shown before James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, and it appears to be the first in a series of character-focused trailers for Doomsday.

A short preview shows Steve Rogers riding a motorcycle and parking at what appears to be his house (likely with Peggy). The scene is set to a slowed-down piano version of the famous Avengers theme song. The motorcycle helmet he’s wearing looks a lot like the one he used as Captain America in The First Avenger. We briefly see him take out his old Captain America costume, then put it away again. He’s shown holding his baby, and the teaser concludes with the announcement that Steve Rogers will be back in Avengers: Doomsday. A countdown clock then appears, indicating the film will be released in theaters a year from now.

It looks like it will take a huge, reality-threatening crisis to get Steve Rogers, now living a quiet life, back into superhero mode. Whether he has a baby or not, it’s hard to believe Captain America would ignore a call to save the world – even if the threat comes from someone who appears to be his old friend, Tony Stark. The film raises questions about the role of Steve and Peggy’s child, as there’s a history of Rogers family members becoming heroes in the comics. Hopefully, this won’t mean Sam Wilson, who recently took on the role of Captain America, will be overlooked, especially after only one movie. The comics have shown both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson sharing the Captain America title for years, so we’ll have to see how it plays out when Avengers: Doomsday comes out in a year.
