Avengers 5 Planned To Put Shang-Chi In The Lead Before Getting Scrapped

As a die-hard Marvel fan with a heart for diversity and representation, I can’t help but feel thrilled about the return of Shang-Chi! Having watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings multiple times, I was captivated by its unique blend of action, culture, and heart. The film’s success during the pandemic, both critically and financially, was a testament to Marvel Studios’ ability to create compelling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.

In the highly anticipated film Avengers 5, formerly known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the captivating character Shang-Chi from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will take on a pivotal part. With fans excitedly looking forward to his comeback, there’s been a bit of a wait for news regarding a follow-up movie.

It’s been reported by Inverse that Shang-Chi was initially slated as the main character in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but neither the studio nor the actor have confirmed this. It’s possible that the movie would have explained the mid-credit scene from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where the Ten Rings were hinted to be a guiding light. This could potentially mean that Doomsday might be connected to Doctor Doom instead of Kang the Conqueror through this beacon.

Initially, Shang-Chi was intended to play a significant role in the movie “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” which Destin Daniel Cretton was set to direct along with “The Legend of the Ten Rings.” However, in November 2023, Cretton withdrew from this project, following closely on the heels of Jonathan Majors’ dismissal from Marvel Studios. Now, Cretton is engaged in developing a sequel for Shang-Chi and also working on the Wonder Man series.

During the Multiverse Saga, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings turned out to be a huge success. Remarkably, even with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the movie garnered $224 million within the U.S. and an additional $432 million globally, achieving a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This marked the introduction of a new character since Captain Marvel in 2019. Despite some fans expressing doubts about Marvel’s capabilities following Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings proved that the studio continues to excel at producing successful films.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m here to share insights on the exciting world of cinema, and today we’re talking about Marvel Studios. While they’re currently pondering the next step for Shang-Chi, it’s not because they’re not thrilled about his return – quite the contrary! You see, with so many sub-franchises in play and a relatively short span since the release of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (which, by the way, was back in 2016), they’re taking their time to ensure the sequel is nothing short of spectacular.

Indeed, Simu Liu has shared some positive updates. In a chat with The Times of India, Liu revealed that Marvel Studios is indeed planning for Shang-Chi 2. Liu mentioned, “Much of it is beyond my control, but rest assured, it’s happening. I’m just thrilled about the prospect and can’t wait to contribute. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose any more details at this moment.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings marks a significant milestone in Marvel Studios, being the first movie directed by an Asian filmmaker and featuring a primarily Asian cast. The movie had its grand premiere in Hollywood, Los Angeles on August 16th, 2021, and was launched across the United States on September 3rd as part of Phase Four within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Globally, it generated over $432 million in box office sales, ranking it as the ninth highest-grossing film of 2021.

1. This movie broke multiple box office records, gained positive feedback from critics, and stood out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to its nuanced portrayal and celebration of Asian culture. The action scenes were highly praised, as was Leung’s performance. The film earned several awards, including a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Oscars. A follow-up is currently being developed.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement as I share this astounding news: My beloved “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” has raked in an incredible $432.2 million worldwide! In the US and Canada, it grossed a whopping $224.5 million, while in other territories, it earned another $207.7 million.
