AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER’s ‘Bitter Work’ Episode Is the Show’s Most Underrated and Inspirational Gem

It’s puzzling why human beings often seem to focus on their own imperfections. Is it merely a sad truth of existence? Could there be a scientific explanation? Do we feel compelled to dislike ourselves so that we might strive for self-improvement? Maybe it’s because we recognize our flaws so deeply, and this drives us to change for whatever challenges the universe presents next. Whatever the motivation, it’s certainly unpleasant. Over the past few years (and maybe longer), I have wrestled significantly with intensely scrutinizing my shortcomings and despising myself for them.

I find myself struggling with feelings of underperformance, laziness, and incomprehensibility, as if I’m just a random collection of cells somehow brought to life. It can be challenging to find purpose when I struggle to see it within myself. However, there’s a silver lining – the show “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” particularly its “Bitter Work” episode from season two, exists. This overlooked gem in an already uplifting series has a knack for nourishing the soul.

ATLA is hard to surpass when it comes to creating an exceptional show. Upon multiple rewatches over the past decade, I’ve been consistently struck by how unique each episode feels. While there’s certainly an overarching plot, there are numerous episodes that have their own distinct themes and lessons – from topics like responsibility, gender inequality, and imperialism – that can be enjoyed and understood individually as well.

Despite my earlier mentioned hardships, I’ve come to realize that “Bitter Work” could be my preferred episode from the series. This episode showcases Aang’s initial efforts in mastering earthbending, and Toph, a tough mentor fitting for Earth and rock-shifting, provides a challenging training experience for Aang. To put it simply, his learning curve isn’t exactly smooth.

This installment signifies a significant shift in the course of the series, as it’s been previously established that Team Avatar’s leader, Aang, has demonstrated extraordinary skills across various disciplines. Being the Avatar, he has already displayed an impressive array of abilities such as waterbending, communicating with spirits, and even summoning powers akin to Godzilla. However, earthbending proves to be a challenge for him, despite his cosmic-level talent. This struggle leaves him disorganized, leading to a period of growing frustration that eventually gives way to a visible bout of depression.

Simultaneously facing his own trials, the other significant character in the series, Zuko, engages in a parallel, yet distinct training journey. Wise and amiable Uncle Iroh guides Zuko through understanding the significance of each element, demonstrating balance in an almost subtle and tender manner – perhaps the most delicate and effective way ever depicted. Given his past as a Fire Nation army general, Iroh’s insights into each nation carry significant weight. Iroh acquired his wisdom, both philosophical and practical (such as learning to control lightning), through observing others.

In essence, the “Bitter Work” episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender teaches us that every situation demands its unique approach and people handle things differently based on their individual perspectives. Each culture prioritizes differently, and it’s crucial to learn from these differences to achieve harmony and tranquility. This idea might seem complex or unexpected in a Nickelodeon series, but its relevance transcends age.

The experiences Aang undergoes are significantly significant. Unlike other abilities or knowledge he’s acquired so far, he can’t lean on his natural talent alone. For him, there’s often no easy solution to problems; one must simply persevere. This journey can be messy, inexact, and even demeaning at times. It seems the episode is communicating that everyone, even a prince or the world’s most gifted individual, will face immense challenges. While their struggles won’t mirror each other exactly, the learning process for all of us inevitably involves overcoming hurdles.

It occasionally crosses my mind if we’re overusing the term “talent.” Frankly, I can’t think of a suitable substitute at the moment. This isn’t intended to be harsh or critical, but the frequent use of “talent” might suggest that hard work and effort from those less fortunate wasn’t required. Just a thought!

Furthermore, it seems as though numerous influencers and Success Gurus prevalent in today’s media landscape may share a hidden formula for success. However, life’s journey, the part often glamorized in movies like boxing or your preferred Shōnen anime, can sometimes be incredibly tough!

It’s possible that there are no hidden abilities; instead, it seems like the world is more inclined towards a specific type of talent in each individual. However, this doesn’t diminish the vast array of skills, teachings, relationships, and cultural insights we can acquire. In the movie Good Will Hunting, we saw an intellectual genius, yet one lacking in emotional intelligence. Aang was initially just a talented kid, until he encountered not only physical earthbending, but also the mindset of an Earthbender. Zuko believed he knew it all, but it took him experiencing diverse perspectives to truly understand.

The Last Airbender. There seems to be a small, negative imp in my mind spreading harmful, self-critical thoughts. However, with a fresh start in the new year, I aim to make another attempt. I want to strive to remember that everything has value and life’s path is far too intricate for anyone to believe it’s just about some people having their lives perfectly sorted out while others do not.

Maybe all you can do is just get to work.
