‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Set To Overperform at the Box Office in Second Weekend

James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is still the top movie in theaters. Experts predict it will make between $55 and $65 million in the U.S. this weekend, and between $75 and $80 million including the Monday holiday.

While ticket sales fell from its impressive $89 million opening weekend, the ‘Avatar’ series is famous for maintaining popularity over time, rather than relying on massive initial numbers. The previous two ‘Avatar’ movies both earned over $2 billion globally and held the top spot in North America for seven weeks in a row. ‘Fire and Ash’ is expected to perform similarly, remaining popular with audiences for weeks to come.

Several new movies are expected to attract audiences this weekend. Sony’s comedy, “Anaconda,” featuring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, is predicted to gross around $20 million from 3,400 theaters. The film centers on a group of friends trying to recreate the 1997 movie of the same name, but they encounter a real anaconda in the jungle. Also releasing is A24’s “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet as a table tennis star, which is forecast to earn between $12 and $20 million. It had a successful limited release, earning $875,000 from only six theaters.

Critics are praising “Marty Supreme,” and Timothée Chalamet’s innovative promotion has created a lot of excitement. Meanwhile, Focus Features’ new musical drama, “Song Sung Blue,” starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, is expected to earn between $10 and $14 million when it opens in 2,400 theaters. The film centers around two musicians who come together to form a band that performs the songs of Neil Diamond.

So far this year, domestic movie ticket sales have reached $8.37 billion – a little bit more than last year, but still significantly lower than in 2019. Successful movies like “Lilo & Stitch,” “Zootopia 2,” and “Demon Slayer” have boosted numbers, but some expensive films, including “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and “Snow White,” didn’t perform well, which has slowed progress. Originally, experts predicted $9 billion in sales, and it’s now unclear whether upcoming holiday releases will be enough to reach that goal.
