‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Opening Falls Short Compared to ‘The Way of Water’

The new ‘Avatar’ movie, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, had a good opening weekend before Christmas, bringing in significant ticket sales, though it didn’t quite match the performance of the first ‘Avatar’ film.

The film reportedly made $88 million in the US and $345 million globally during its opening weekend. Although this is lower than the $134 million US and $434.5 million worldwide debut of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022, it still puts the movie in a strong position to be the year’s biggest Hollywood hit.

Experts believe the film could earn at least $400 million in the U.S. and $1.6 billion globally during the holiday season. This is due to showings in premium formats like IMAX, and the fact that it will be playing in theaters throughout the holidays, despite Christmas Eve falling mid-week this year.

While not as big of a hit right away as “The Way of Water,” “Fire and Ash” is still predicted to do very well in the coming weeks.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is the third movie in the Avatar series. Cameron wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, building on a story idea from Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The film features returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet reprising their roles.

James Cameron began discussing potential sequels to Avatar almost immediately after the first movie became a hit, back in 2006. While the first two sequels were confirmed in 2010, creating more films and developing the necessary technology for filming underwater scenes caused considerable delays.

Production on “Fire and Ash” started in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, overlapping with filming for “The Way of Water.” It took over three years to complete, wrapping up in late December 2020. The movie cost over $400 million to make, making it one of the priciest films ever produced. It’s dedicated to the memories of editor John Refoua, who passed away in 2023, and producer Jon Landau, who died in 2024.

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” premiered at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on December 1st and became widely available in U.S. cinemas on December 19th. Initial reactions highlighted the film’s stunning visuals, compelling characters, strong acting, and exciting action. However, critics had mixed feelings about the story, writing, and length of the movie.

More Avatar movies are on the way! “Avatar 4” is planned for release in 2029, and “Avatar 5” will follow in 2031.
