On June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold saw nine unusual, boomerang-shaped objects flying rapidly near Mount Rainier. He calculated their speed by observing how quickly they moved between mountain peaks, and the media soon began calling these objects “flying saucers” because of his description.
