Takuto Ira finds himself reborn in a fantasy world as the leader of a once-powerful, but now struggling, evil empire – a place he used to control in a video game. Alongside a strange companion, he aims to create a peaceful kingdom, navigating the complex relationships between different magical groups. The anime centers on the everyday challenges of ruling, including managing the needs of his monster subjects. It’s a unique blend of relaxing slice-of-life moments with the strategic elements of city-building and tactical planning, showing what it’s like to be a ruler trying to build a harmonious society despite a fearsome past.

The updated science fiction series made a notable change to the character of Boomer. In the original 1978 show, Boomer was played by Herbert Jefferson Jr., who is Black. However, the 2004 version featured Grace Park as a female pilot named Sharon Valerii, also known as Boomer. This meant the character’s race changed from Black to Asian, and was done as part of an overall effort to modernize the show and its characters.

I was completely captivated by this documentary. It’s a really powerful and intimate look at the ball culture scene in New York City during the late 80s. What struck me most was how these ‘Houses’ became chosen families for so many LGBTQ+ young people, offering a safe haven and the support they desperately needed. We meet incredible figures like Pepper LaBeija and Willi Ninja – true ‘House Mothers’ and ‘Fathers’ – who stepped in to provide guidance, shelter, and genuine love to kids often rejected by their own families. It really highlights the idea of found family and how essential these parental figures were – and still are – to the survival and vibrancy of the ballroom community. It’s a deeply moving and important film.
