Aubrey Plaza’s Mysterious AGATHA ALL ALONG Character Rio Vidal, Explained

From the captivating world of Marvel Studios, the enigmatic character of Rio Vidal, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza, has certainly left us intrigued. With her mysterious past and tumultuous relationship with Agatha Harkness, it’s as if we’ve stumbled upon a centuries-old soap opera!

In the series WandaVision, the character portrayed by Kathryn Hahn as the nosy neighbor was revealed to be much more sinister than typical sitcom characters. Now, a spinoff of the show has been released, and it introduces a new mysterious witch. Aubrey Plaza is a fresh Marvel character who appears to have a complex history with Agatha Harkness. However, their past remains unclear, as does the motive behind her apparent desire for Agatha’s demise. Here’s what we currently know about the enigmatic Rio Vidal from Agatha All Along, the show’s green-witch antagonist with a dark heart.

What Marvel Comics Character Is Aubrey Plaza’s Agatha All Along Character Based On?

Rio Vidal, referred to as having a “black heart,” is an innovative and unique character who doesn’t have a direct or immediately recognizable comic equivalent in terms of name or function. For now, she appears to represent an entirely fresh persona within the Marvel universe.

Since Rio is depicted as a Green Enchantress, some theories suggest that she shares a vague resemblance or might be inspired by Marvel Comics’ antagonist Dian, also known as the Emerald Sorcerer. He is a formidable dark magic user, often referred to as the Emerald Warlock. (Wink, wink!)

There seems to be no indication or common ties linking these two characters, except for their long lifespans. However, if they are indeed related, Dian’s past opens up some intriguing speculations. He had collaborated with Agatha Harkness at one point and later became a formidable adversary of the Scarlet Witch, engaging in conflict with her on the Witches Road.

What Is a Green Witch on Agatha All Along?

Agatha’s attempts to establish a coven unveiled various types of witches in the MCU. Some are divination witches, others brew potions, while some possess a special bond with nature, known as green witches. Green witches, such as Ms. Hart (whose real name is Sharon), have a unique ability to interact with the earth’s magic.

What Happened With Rio Vidal and Agathan Harkness Before Agatha All Along?

Rio Vidal arrived in Westview to assist Agatha in breaking free from the spell cast by the late Wanda, which had confined her as Agnes for three years within her own consciousness. Upon Agatha’s escape from this fabricated police drama, Rio disguised himself as an FBI agent within it, hinting that he may have been responsible for creating this false reality. However, shortly after Agatha emerged, the Green Witch, who is both a powerful sorceress and fierce combatant, attempted to kill her. Fortunately, according to witch laws, she couldn’t do so because Agatha had no magical powers left.

But why would Rio help Agatha break out of her mental prison if she hates Agatha? Was it only so the Salem Seven could finish off Agatha Harkness for her? Or is their love behind that animosity? The two witches violent interaction hinted at a previous romantic relationship that goes back many centuries. Rio also knew that Agatha’s original coven betrayed her, which is why Agatha attacked them.

Is it possible that Rio intends to preserve Agatha, rather than destroy her? Could it be that Agatha appeared in Westview to protect someone she cares about deeply? Or could there be a lighter, more entertaining motive for Agatha’s actions – something we wouldn’t necessarily associate with Disney+?
