Forty-five years ago, Mattel’s Intellivision console revolutionized home video gaming, challenging Atari’s dominance and sparking what became known as the “Console War.” Just like the famous “Cola Wars” of the 80s, this rivalry defined a generation. Now, in a surprising turn of events, Atari and Plaion have teamed up to create the new Intellivision Sprint. This console blends the iconic look of the 1980s with today’s gaming technology. It features the classic gold and black design with a wood-grain finish, but also includes modern upgrades like two wireless controllers, HDMI connectivity, and a USB port to expand its game library.
The Intellivision stood out from its competitors thanks to its impressive library of 45 built-in games, particularly in the areas of sports and strategy. Sports fans could enjoy titles like Baseball, Chip Shot Super Pro Golf, Soccer, Super Pro Skiing, Tennis, and Super Pro Football. Strategy gamers could dive into classics such as B-17 Bomber, Sea Battle, Space Battle, and Utopia. The system also featured popular arcade games like Astrosmash, Shark! Shark!, Star Strike, Thin Ice, and Boulder Dash. To enhance the experience, the collection includes two unique and visually appealing controller overlays for each game.
Matt Burnett, VP at Atari, announced the company is celebrating Intellivision’s 45th anniversary by relaunching the classic console. Atari purchased the Intellivision brand and its games last year, and the first product of that acquisition, the Intellivision Sprint, is now available for pre-order.
