The Japanese drama titled Asura delves into the intricate emotions of grief, jealousy, and trust within a household. It also examines how infidelity recurs, affecting each family member’s individual life, sometimes directly and other times indirectly. This recurring theme seems to have a stifling impact on the women in particular.
Under the skilled guidance of renowned director Hirokazu Kore-eda, a new Japanese series made its debut on Netflix on January 9, 2025. This production is a modern take on the drama “Like Asura,” which was originally penned by Kuniko Mukoda.
The series, set in 1970s Tokyo, unfolds the tale of the Takezawa family. Kotaro, now 70, is the family head who has been involved in numerous extramarital relationships throughout his life. He has four daughters – Takiko, Makiko, Tsukano, and Sakiko – with his wife Fuji, who was aware of his infidelities but opted to stay silent. Tragically, she passed away due to the emotional burden.
In the course of the series, Kotaro was deeply involved with Tomoko over a long period. However, near its conclusion, Tomoko feigned marriage to another person as a strategy to distance herself from Kotaro and safeguard her foster child, Shoji, from emotional distress. Though this move ended their romantic connection, Kotaro continued to maintain contact with his son and assumed a fatherly role.
Born as the oldest child to Kotaro and Fuji, and recognized for her exceptional academic abilities, Tsukano lives a solitary existence. Eventually, she acknowledges that her relationship with Sadaharu Masukawa has reached a point of no return. Tragedy strikes when a gas leak occurs in her home, an incident that may have been a desperate act on her part to end her life along with Sadaharu, suggesting a suicide attempt fueled by her love for him.
Sakiko and Takiko have a tense sibling relationship. When Sakiko’s partner falls into a coma, she finds herself in a fragile state of life, overwhelmed by grief. On one difficult night, she encounters a stranger who later attempts to blackmail her. However, in an unexpected display of sisterly affection, Takiko steps up to protect Sakiko from harm.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: In my own life, I find myself, much like Makiko, questioning the loyalty of my spouse. Despite his denials, I choose to address the issue head-on, viewing my actions as a step towards asserting my independence – a stark contrast to my mother who endured her suspicions in silence until her sorrow led to her untimely demise. This journey embodies my determination to take charge of my life and make my own decisions.
In summary, the conclusion delves into intricate family relationships and the consequences that ensue when suppressed emotional conflicts begin to fray.
