As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless narratives, I can confidently say that the upcoming Netflix series, “Asura,” promises to be a captivating journey worth embarking on. Having grown up watching Japanese family dramas, I have a soft spot for stories that delve into the complexities of human relationships, and this one seems to be right up my alley.
Beginning on January 9th, the series titled “Asura” offers a unique twist to the traditional Japanese family drama, similar to “Like Asura“. This captivating production features renowned Japanese actors such as Rie Miyazawa, Machiko Ono, Yu Aoi, and Suzu Hirose.
Under the direction and script of Hirokazu Kore-eda (renowned for “Shoplifters” and “Our Little Sister”), and produced by Yasuo Yagi, this series delves into a familiar portrayal of family dynamics and universal connections. A recently unveiled introductory video sets the story in the 1970s, preserving the authenticity of the drama’s original atmosphere.
Originally penned by the late screenwriter Kuniko Mukoda, “Like Asura” laid the foundation for Japanese family dramas. This captivating tale is set in 1979, revolving around four sisters – Tsunako, Makiko, Takiko, and Sakiko – as they navigate through the shock of their aging father’s extramarital affair.
Similar to the fierce demi-gods known as “Asuras” in Buddhist tales, these sisters grapple with a tempest of feelings that occasionally lead them into conflict but also foster profound bonds. Each sister embarks on her unique journey through love and life, facing hurdles and nurturing personal growth along the way.
In the realm of gaming, I’m diving deep into Kore-eda’s adaptation of Asura, a game level that resonates deeply with Mukoda’s masterpieces. What sets these dramas apart is the intricate dance between tension in dialogue and the compassion lurking beneath harsh exchanges. The actresses portraying the sisters have grasped this essence, making each scene a rich, fulfilling adventure to be part of.
Looking back at the forty years since her demise, Producer Yagi reminisces about Mukoda’s enduring legacy. “Reexamining her work, I realized that Asura was a pivotal part of her influence. We meticulously selected the right performers to portray the sisters, and with Kore-eda at the helm, I think we’ve crafted an exceptional drama.
Embark on the quest for genuine happiness alongside these sisters in ‘Asura’, available for streaming on January 9, only on Netflix.
On a chilly winter day, I gather with my three sisters – Tsunako, who teaches ikebana, Makiko, the housewife, Takiko, our librarian, and Sakiko, the waitress – after quite some time apart.
It’s suspected by Takiko that their elderly father, Kotaro, may be involved with a partner and have a child. This idea seems implausible to the other sisters, yet they pledge to conceal it from their mother, Fuji. Nevertheless, this turbulence reveals hidden conflicts and secrets that are harbored within the lives of the women.
