It’s high time for an Assassin’s Creed TV series! The beloved video game series offers a rich environment for extended storytelling, beyond the 2009 mini-series you might not recall. This franchise uniquely combines history, science fiction, and exhilarating combat sequences, a truly potent trifecta. A television show would provide a more in-depth look at characters and stories than fans have been accustomed to. Now, after nearly five years of teasing us with the prospect, Netflix is finally bringing a live-action Assassin’s Creed series to life!
Ten years following the controversial 2016 movie version featuring Michael Fassbender, Assassin’s Creed is set for another live-action adaptation. Netflix has finally greenlit the series based on Ubisoft’s game which has been in development for quite some time. In fact, Netflix announced plans to develop this show all the way back in 2020.
The series originates from Roberto Patino, known for works like DMZ, Westworld, and Sons of Anarchy, and David Wiener, recognized for Halo, Homecoming, and The Killing. They will both take on the roles of showrunners and executive producers. In a joint statement, Wiener and Patino expressed their enthusiasm and humility while working on this project: “We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its debut in 2007. Each day we work on this show leaves us excited and humbled by the stories Assassin’s Creed allows us to tell. Beneath the action, adventure, and parkour lies a foundation for the most fundamental kind of human narrative — stories about individuals seeking meaning, grappling with questions of identity, destiny, and faith. It is about themes like power, violence, love, greed, and vengeance.
For individuals just joining the Assassin’s Creed franchise who may be unfamiliar with its lore, Netflix characterizes it as a fast-paced action-thriller revolving around a covert conflict between two mysterious groups. One faction aims to decide humanity’s fate by controlling and manipulating events, while the other struggles to defend free will.
The official tagline hints at a grand, ambitious TV series. Here’s the description from Netflix: “This series portrays its characters navigating significant historical milestones while struggling to determine human history’s course.
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the Assassin’s Creed series, as it has consistently promised an immersive experience that only this franchise can deliver. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take too long more for it to grace our screens on Netflix.
