‘Arrowverse’ Stars Left Out of Flash Crossovers Over Pay Disputes, Says Danielle Panabaker

At the end of last year, when the Arrowverse wrapped up, viewers started to notice that several recurring characters were absent from the more recent Flash crossover episodes. It seems that financial considerations played a significant role in their absence.

The collaborative episodes, dating back to 2014 between The Flash’s first season and Arrow’s second season, united characters from various series and garnered much appreciation among fans. However, off-screen, things didn’t always run as smoothly.

In a recent chat on the “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum” podcast, Danielle Panabaker – known for her role as Killer Frost in “The Flash” series – disclosed that actors who requested payment equivalent to their main show earnings frequently found themselves excluded from crossover episodes.

She explained how complicated and frustrating the pay situation was, especially in the early days.

Panabaker explained that the initial crossover episode was particularly challenging for the cast since they had to perform duties for two separate shows simultaneously. To put it another way, during Flash’s first season, they filmed the first crossover with just The Flash and Arrow. This meant Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, and Emily Bett Rickards joined The Flash, while Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdes, and Panabaker appeared on Arrow. However, the compensation they received for these additional roles was surprisingly minimal.

Panabaker clarified that when they simultaneously performed two roles as guests on Arrow, it was considered the main role. However, at that time, this opportunity paid less than $10,000, which is not their typical wage.

Instead, it implied they were earning merely a small portion of their earnings from The Flash, as this job required them to work twice as hard and they would only receive a fraction of their usual pay for doing two jobs.

They were getting paid a lot less than what they earned on The Flash, because this job demanded twice the effort but only offered a small portion of the usual payment.

In the early days, crossover appearances weren’t part of the actors’ contracts as The Flash was still a fresh show and Arrow was already established. Later on, shows like Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl had this pay structure for crossovers in their initial contracts. However, with time, some prominent stars began insisting on receiving full payment for their appearances in crossover episodes.

She mentioned that someone had demanded their salary, stating, ‘No, compensate me.’ As a result, this individual was excluded from the collaborative projects, leading to disappointment among many spectators due to the salary dispute.

As the Arrowverse concluded last year following the final season of Superman & Lois in December 2024, this behind-the-scenes account sheds light on many aspects of the franchise’s true happenings overall.

It’s significant to mention that not all actors from the series Superman & Lois remained as regular cast members for the final season, primarily due to financial constraints. Consequently, only the principal characters, played by Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, were present in every episode.
