Arnold Schwarzenegger first became a major movie star with the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, followed by Conan the Destroyer in 1984. For the past forty years, he’s often talked about revisiting the character in a King Conan movie. The original King Conan stories by Robert E. Howard were set after Conan became king. Now, after a long wait, a King Conan project is finally gaining momentum, and Schwarzenegger says the well-known director Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible) is involved. Twentieth Century Studios is reportedly the studio backing the film. Schwarzenegger shared the news at the Arnold Sports Festival, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Here’s what he said about returning to the role that made him famous:
They’ve brought on a really talented writer and director who previously worked on Tom Cruise’s last four films. He’s now in charge of writing and directing the new King Conan movie. The approach is to create a role that fits my current age – I’ll still be action-packed, but the character will be more realistic for where I am in my career.
The new Conan story focuses on his time as king – forty years, in fact – and his eventual exile. It’s a classic tale of conflict and a journey back to power, filled with action, magic, and fantastical creatures. The studio is investing heavily in special effects, so I expect these films to be visually spectacular.
The original Conan the Barbarian movie came out in the 1980s from Universal Pictures. Now, Twentieth Century Studios owns the rights, which means Conan is now a part of Disney. Author Robert E. Howard originally wrote five King Conan novels, and both Marvel and Dark Horse Comics have since published comics based on those stories.
At the same event, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed he’s discussed a potential return as Dutch in a future Predator film with director Dan Trachtenberg. The recent animated movie, Predator: Killer of Killers, hinted at this possibility, and with the popularity of Predator: Badlands, another sequel seems likely. Schwarzenegger also mentioned the possibility of a Commando 2. The question is, can the 78-year-old actor still handle the physical demands of action roles? Harrison Ford proved it’s possible with a fifth Indiana Jones movie just two years ago, so why not Arnold?
