Ariana Greenblatt Says Disney Pushed Her to Get on Social Media

Ariana Greenblatt recently shared her thoughts on the challenges of social media in an interview with Cosmopolitan’s website.

The actress, who started her career on the Disney Channel, shared that she was pushed to start using social media when she was very young.

Rowan Blanchard said that when she was on the Disney Channel, the network encouraged her to get social media, but her dad wouldn’t allow it at first. She technically made accounts when she was seven, but she didn’t start using them regularly until around age 13, when she wanted to fit in and seem ‘cool.’

Greenblatt shared that social media significantly impacts her mental well-being. She explained that she recently had to stop using TikTok, comparing social media to an addictive substance. “I deleted TikTok off my phone a week ago after having to wean myself off of it. Social media is a drug. It’s fully a drug,” she stated.

She explained how easily her mood can be affected by negative online comments. She said that even just a few upsetting videos can quickly ruin her entire day, making her feel physically ill. It’s surprising how a single scroll through social media can have such a strong impact on both her emotions and her body.

When things get tough, Greenblatt turns to her brother, Gavin, who helps her remember that what she’s experiencing isn’t actually happening. She also took a break from her main social media account and used a private one to stay in touch with friends.

Greenblatt pointed out a key difference between TikTok and Instagram: on TikTok, negative comments are immediately visible, while she has to actively search for them on Instagram. She enjoys using Instagram Stories and finds the creative process of making them particularly appealing.

She explained that social media has changed how she sees herself as an actress. She felt pressured to focus on her appearance because platforms often edit scenes she films, and she believes actors need to avoid outside opinions to do their best work.

What she experienced is happening more and more in Hollywood: actors are increasingly finding that their social media popularity can impact whether or not they get cast in roles. In some instances, having a large online following is as important as acting ability when it comes to landing a job.
