Ariana Grande has expressed her excitement about fulfilling a long-held dream by taking on the role of Glinda the Good Witch in the upcoming movie version of “Wicked“. On the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, she discussed her readiness for the part, the significance of the character, and her plans to balance her music career with acting in the future.
Grande has a deep-rooted connection with the musical “Wicked”. As a child, she developed a strong affection for it after watching the original Broadway production. The performance by Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda particularly stood out and left an indelible impact. Expressing her feelings, Grande said, “It’s almost unbelievable to consider that I am stepping into these shoes – ones I have admired since my childhood.” She considers the role a “privilege beyond compare,” marking it as the greatest honor of her life.
Playing the character of Glinda isn’t just about donning glittery dresses and hitting high notes; Ariana Grande found it to be a profoundly emotional and transformative experience. She shared that she began acting lessons a year before auditions, wanting to be fully prepared. “Transforming my voice to sing Glinda’s soprano parts took months,” she explained. “Musical theater and pop are two completely different realms, and I had to change my approach to every note.
The effort I put in didn’t go unnoticed, but the weight of the part never escaped her, she expressed. “Glinda isn’t merely a character for me—she embodies growth and love. As soon as I heard about this role, I knew it would be ingrained in my heart forever. I wanted to portray it with the respect it deserved.
One particularly difficult sequence for Grande involved singing the well-known “For Good” duet alongside her co-star Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba. The intensity of emotions demanded in this scene has left a deep impact. “It was an experience like no other“, Grande stated. “We filmed it for a week, and the feelings it evoked have lingered with me. I haven’t watched the final version yet because I’m unsure if I’m prepared to relive those emotions again.
The upcoming sequel to “Wicked,” titled “Wicked: For Good,” set for release on November 21, will feature a fresh composition by composer Stephen Schwartz specifically for the character Glinda. Ariana Grande referred to this song as a “crucial moment” in Glinda’s storyline. “In the stage version, her transformation takes place offstage. In the film, we get to witness her making the choice that shapes her identity. It’s an honor to perform this song and be the first Glinda to introduce it to audiences.
Lately, Ariana Grande has been busy with her project “Wicked,” but she hasn’t neglected her music. She announced that a deluxe edition of her album “Eternal Sunshine” is ready to go, though it hasn’t dropped yet. “I can’t wait to surprise my fans with it someday,” she hinted. “The new songs are brief but powerful. I decided against adding tracks merely for the sake of it.
Regarding live performances, Grande has opted to postpone them temporarily. She mentioned contemplating a mini-tour between the Wicked films, but has chosen instead to prioritize acting. “Performing will always have a place in my life,” she added, “but for this phase, I wish to concentrate on storytelling through movies.
Idina Menzel’s love for musical theater is evident as she expressed her desire for more Broadway productions to be turned into movies. When inquired about her future plans, she pondered thoughtfully. “Currently, I’m deeply engrossed in Wicked. Acting has a sense of familiarity that I didn’t anticipate. I simply want to continue sharing stories – whether it’s through music, cinema, or humor.
In her portrayal of Glinda on the silver screen, Ariana Grande isn’t simply acting the role; rather, she’s breathing life into it by fully embodying the character. As fans anxiously look forward to her upcoming performances, Grande stays dedicated to giving her all in every appearance.
