Ariana Grande Says ‘Glinda Might Be a Little in the Closet’; Teases Romance with Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba in Wicked

As a long-time fan of musical theater and an ardent supporter of representation in media, this news about Wicked has me absolutely thrilled! Growing up as a young queer girl, I yearned for characters I could relate to on screen, and seeing Ariana Grande‘s character Glinda potentially exploring a romantic relationship with Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba feels like a dream come true.

Ariana Grande hints at a potential deepening relationship between her Wicked character, Glinda, and Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, going beyond mere friendship.

During an interview with Gay Times from the U.K., the actresses were asked about fans who imagined their characters in a romantic relationship. Erivo, aged 37, expressed that her character embodies a spirit of independence and fearlessness when it comes to self-decision making. Regarding Elphaba, she stated that love transcends traditional heterosexual definitions. The actress, known for portraying the Green Witch, mentioned that she doesn’t see anything wrong with fans appreciating the strong bond between Glinda and Elphaba.

In the movie directed by Jon M. Chu, Grandé’s and Erivo’s characters initially dislike each other because of their contrasting natures. However, they eventually develop a deep and meaningful friendship.

In conversation with the media outlet, Erivo expressed that “the connection and affection they develop toward each other becomes something indestructible.

In her own words, Grande expressed that their bond feels unique because they each offer a safe sanctuary for one another. She further commented, “That’s what any relationship should ideally embody, whether it’s romantic or friendly.” The talented artist and actress then hinted playfully, “Perhaps Glinda has secrets to share. Time will tell!

The musical “Wicked,” which won a Tony in 2003 and is now being released in two parts, debuts Part One today in cinemas. In this initial release of the production, Glinda’s character seems to harbor feelings for Prince Fiyero, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, despite an earlier hint that she might be secretive about her sexuality. This first part spans approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes.

In an interview with GLAAD, when asked about their expectations for LGBTQ viewers regarding the movie Wicked, both Grande and Erivo expressed a desire for queer audience members to identify with Elphaba’s vulnerability as a misunderstood character in Oz. Elphaba, who grapples with feelings of loneliness and otherness, eventually recognizes her unique worth. Erivo hopes that the empowering message of self-acceptance will stay with the LGBTQ community long after watching the film.

Grande concurred, mentioning that Oz, the fantastical realm where the story of Wicked takes place, is remarkably diverse and unconventional.
