At the 2024 National Board of Review gala, Ariana Grande expressed gratitude to Ryan Reynolds for his kind words about the film Wicked. Directed by Jon M. Chu, this musical fantasy production features Grande as Glinda alongside Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, with a star-studded cast that includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum among others.
At the National Board of Review event on January 7, it was Reynolds who was the presenter, and it was Marc Platt, the producer of Wicked, who received the award for the best film of 2024. Ariana Grande and her fellow stars Yeoh, Slater, Erivo, and director Chu were all in attendance at the gala.
Reynolds expressed great enthusiasm about the movie, highlighting its portrayal of robust, multidimensional female characters and how it continues to move audiences. In simpler terms, he stated, “The film is truly remarkable. It boldly focuses on two strong women. It delves into a profound, intricate relationship that has touched people for more than twenty years on stage.
In her Instagram stories, Grande reshared a post from Reynolds, featuring a picture of herself, with the caption, “You truly touched me, @vancityreynolds. I couldn’t help but laugh.” (or) “Grande reposted a story by Reynolds on her Instagram stories, which included a photo of herself and the caption, ‘You made me feel something strong, @vancityreynolds, and it was hard not to chuckle.’
She said, “I genuinely mean it when I express my gratitude for your thoughtful and extremely generous compliments from last night. They truly meant a lot to me and I want to thank you sincerely!

The actor known for portraying Deadpool and Wolverine also highlighted the common themes often found in films centered around women and the societal pressures mirrored within them. He pointed out that these movies often demand an unattainable perfection, as he remarked, “They’re typically expected to meet the same high standards that women face in reality.
Ryan Reynolds additionally praised Universal and its leading officials for their trust and belief in the movie, Wicked, which played a significant role in its massive triumph.
