At the conclusion of “Captain America: Brave New World,” Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) acknowledged that President Ross (Harrison Ford) was correct on one point – a fresh Avengers team is necessary. It appears that this team, which he seems to be gathering, will replace the old one. The upcoming movie “Thunderbolts” hints at the formation of a new Avengers group by its end. This implies that in the MCU after “Captain America: Brave New World,” we might have two distinct Avengers teams vying for control. This scenario has been seen before within the Marvel Comics, and it’s possible that the MCU could draw from some of these examples.
The West Coast Avengers, the First Avengers Spin-Off Team
For two decades, starting from their debut in 1963 up until 1984, the Avengers were a single team of superheroes in the comics. This was when Marvel introduced the first spinoff team from the Avengers, known as the West Coast Avengers. Unlike a separate group, the West Coast Avengers functioned more as an offshoot of the main Avengers based in New York City. The Vision, who was leading the East Coast Avengers at that time, believed it would be beneficial to extend their influence. The initial team for the West Coast Avengers comic series consisted of Hawkeye (Clint Barton), Iron Man (James Rhodes), Mockingbird, Wonder Man, and Tigra. Later additions included the Vision, Scarlet Witch, Moon Knight, Dr. Henry Pym, and to date, only Tigra has not been introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Could Captain America Form an MCU West Coast Avengers?
In the aftermath of “Captain America: Brave New World,” it’s conceivable that Sam Wilson forms a new Avengers team in Los Angeles, inviting friends such as Rhodey and Clint to join. Vision and Wonder Man could potentially join once their Disney+ series conclude. Given hints, Laura Barton (played by Linda Cardellini) might take on the role of Mockingbird within the MCU. However, Moon Knight may not be a team player in this context. Wanda Maximoff seems to be absent or deceased at this point. Henry Pym could serve as a technical advisor for the team, with Ant-Man (Clint’s friend “Tic Tac”) being part of the group. There were hints of Ant-Man throughout “Captain America: Brave New World.” Falcon Joaquín Torres is likely to be included in this version of the Avengers as he was invited by Sam, allowing him to meet Ant-Man for the first time. This setup aligns well with our understanding of the MCU.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there’s an opportunity for Captain America to establish a West Coast Avengers squad, despite Sam Wilson not being part of that group in the comics. Instead, the upcoming series “Avengers: Doomsday” might introduce this team pre-assembled, bypassing the recruitment process.
The Thunderbolts Become the Dark Avengers in the Marvel Comics
It appears we’re uncertain if Captain America’s group will collaborate or even desire collaboration with the new incarnation of the Avengers in the MCU, known as the Thunderbolts. Given Sam Wilson’s stance against working under government supervision, especially following events in Captain America: Civil War and his recent experiences in Brave New World, it seems unlikely he would join this team. Instead, the new Avengers might assume the role of a government-backed team while retaining the name Avengers, much like the Mighty Avengers from the 2000s. The original Mighty Avengers were led by Iron Man, Wasp, Carol Danvers, Wonder Man, Black Widow, and Ares. However, after they failed to prevent a Skrull infiltration, the government turned to reform the team under the leadership of former villain Norman Osborn.
In the Marvel Comics series known as “Dark Avengers,” Norman Osborn, after his supposed reform, gathers villains who were previously part of the Thunderbolts and rebrands them as the Avengers, complete with classic costumes and names. He attempts to convince the world that these are the genuine successors to the Avengers name, though they continue to refer to themselves simply as “Avengers.” This series ran simultaneously with “New Avengers,” featuring a different group of heroes claiming authenticity. We anticipate a similar narrative unfolding in the MCU, but with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine stepping into the role previously held by Norman Osborn. In this version, the Thunderbolts would become the MCU’s covert Avengers (with an unspoken “dark”), and another team of Avengers will emerge as well.
Two Avengers Teams, One MCU Mission
In our hypothesis, when the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe, two distinct groups claiming to be the Avengers will emerge to confront a new Multiversal danger. Although the identities of Sam’s team are yet unknown, his probable ally Bucky is expected to lead the rebranded Thunderbolts squad. To save the planet, they need to cooperate, but our prediction is that they’ll spend more time fighting each other, potentially leading Earth-616 to destruction because both groups are too preoccupied with squabbling over who truly deserves the title of “real” Avengers. Fingers crossed that Sam and Bucky’s teams can find a way to work together in time to save the world.
