As a die-hard fan of Kevin Smith‘s works and someone who has watched “Dogma” numerous times, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming sequel. The original film was more than just a movie; it was a satirical masterpiece that dared to challenge religious norms while maintaining a unique charm that only the View Askewniverse can provide.
According to Kevin Smith, there are plans for Dogma 2 in the works, potentially featuring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reprising their roles. Smith revealed this during a panel at the Vulture Festival, signaling a long-awaited sequel to his 1999 film after a gap of 25 years.
Smith hinted that Affleck and Damon might once again play the characters of Bartleby and Loki, even for brief appearances, as per Deadline’s report. The director of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back expressed his excitement about this, stating, “Some may say, ‘Don’t mess with it, you’ll ruin it.’ But I’m here to tell you: I will mess with it, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve found a way in.
Regarding their presence in the sequel, Smith declared, “You can definitely anticipate a guest appearance from them – not just any guest appearance, but a significant one. In fact, it’s only with their inclusion that we can even make a Dogma sequel happen. So, rest assured, they will be part of the cast.
1999’s film “Dogma” boasted an illustrious ensemble of Hollywood celebrities, including the likes of Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Linda Fiorentino, Janeane Garofalo, and George Carlin, in addition to Affleck and Damon. Despite being a hit with critics and audiences alike, “Dogma” sparked significant controversy due to its depiction of Catholics, which some found offensive and blasphemous.
Additionally, these events sparked a chain of protests and ominous warnings against Smith. Nevertheless, the film remains one of the most cherished in the Askewniverse collection for its witty sarcasm and religious critique, amassing over $43 million at the box office on a production budget of only $10 million.
Meanwhile, Smith mentioned that he’s been working on the sequel, but also shared exciting news about upcoming releases. There’s going to be a re-release of Dogma, as well as a fresh home release – this marks the movie’s first time being available for streaming! This new version is made possible by another company acquiring distribution rights from Miramax, which Smith thinks will open up opportunities for sequels and potentially even a TV series set within the same universe.
Previously, Kevin Smith had been hesitant to move forward with Harvey Weinstein’s offer to create Dogma 2 once allegations against Weinstein started emerging in 2017. He also expressed feelings of shame for having collaborated with Weinstein and pledged to donate all profits from his projects produced by Weinstein to the Women in Film charity.
