Okay, so I played the Arc Raiders server slam, and one thing that really stood out was how much better the visibility was at night. In the previous tech test, it was really hard to see anything – just the beams from those distant arc towers and the flashes from gunfire in the dark hallways. But the developers at Embark said they’ve tweaked things now. It’s still spooky at night, which is cool, but now you can actually see what you’re shooting at, which is a huge improvement!
After the initial server stress test, we made some adjustments based on player feedback. We realized the nighttime visuals were leaning too heavily towards a flashy ‘Hollywood’ look. We’ve refined them to better match our vision for live night raids, which will subtly change gameplay by reducing how far players can see.
The team created a night haze effect to improve visibility at a distance. It adds a subtle fog, but still lets you clearly see important details like drone searchlights, even from far away.
Grøndal explains that when they detect suspicious activity – like an alert flagging someone doing something wrong – it signals a problem. They aimed for a balance, but ultimately leaned towards a more frightening atmosphere.
This change is great because it makes players think about how they use their torches. Do you want to light them for better visibility, or keep them off to avoid being spotted by other teams? It adds a new level of tension and makes the game’s dark and unsettling mood even stronger.
Recently, Embark detailed plans for voluntary wipes in Arc Raiders.
Arc Raiders will be available on Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 30th, and you can decide if you’re ready to face the challenge it presents.
