Right. AppLovin (APP 5.83%). Honestly, it feels like every other day there’s some new accusation flying around. Today it’s a short-seller report – CapitalWatch, apparently – alleging a Southeast Asian money laundering network. Which, let’s be honest, sounds…complicated. And stressful. I mean, I’m just trying to make a few sensible trades here, not unravel international finance crimes.
The stock dipped 5.8% today, which, okay, it could be worse. It actually recovered a bit yesterday after the initial drop. But still. It’s exhausting. It’s like, will anything ever just…go up steadily? Is that too much to ask? I’ve been trying to be a rational investor, you know? Diversify, long-term thinking… but then something like this happens and I just want to sell everything and buy gold bullion and hide it under the mattress.

What They’re Saying
Apparently, CapitalWatch thinks AppLovin is an “asset sale haven for cross-border black money.” A haven! Honestly, the language these people use. It’s so…dramatic. They also claim violations of anti-money-laundering laws. AppLovin, predictably, is calling it all “false, misleading, and nonsensical.” Which, you know, they would. It’s always ‘false, misleading and nonsensical’ isn’t it?
So, What Now?
This is, like, the fourth short report on AppLovin in the last year. Which is…a lot. None of the previous ones stuck, which is…something. It does make you wonder, though. Is this just a favourite target for short-sellers? It’s soared in recent years, trades at a high valuation, and the business model isn’t exactly straightforward. It’s basically a perfect storm for someone to try and bet against it.
I’m trying to remain optimistic. AppLovin reports fourth-quarter earnings on February 11th. Analysts are predicting a 17.4% revenue increase to $1.61 billion, even with the sale of its apps business throwing a bit of a curveball. Earnings per share are expected to grow from $1.73 to $2.95. Which sounds…good. If it happens. Honestly, I’m starting to suspect that analysts just make these numbers up to give us something to worry about.
