Companies are always rebranding, and streaming services are no exception. We’ve seen a lot of name changes – remember CBS All Access and DC Universe? Now it’s Disney+, Paramount+, and HBO Max, which even briefly reverted back to HBO Max! Apple is joining the trend, hoping a simple name change will make a difference. According to *Deadline*, Apple TV+ is now just Apple TV, though many people likely thought that was the name all along.
The company known for phones, earbuds, and other devices recently announced it was changing its name in a press release about the upcoming movie *F1: The Movie*, which will be available on its platform. This isn’t just a simple mistake – it’s a complete and official rebranding.
Despite some initial skepticism, Apple TV+ has consistently delivered high-quality, award-winning television over the last six years. Shows like *Severance*, *Ted Lasso*, *Silo*, *Monarch: Legacy of Monsters*, and the upcoming *Pluribus* (from Vince Gilligan) are just a few examples. They’ve also had success in film, with the Oscar-winning *CODA* and *Killers of the Flower Moon*. Apple invests heavily in its projects and gives creative teams a lot of freedom, and the results clearly demonstrate that approach is working.
Apple’s original films, documentaries, and series have received significant recognition, earning a total of 620 wins and 2,816 award nominations. This includes accolades for popular shows like the Emmy-winning comedy *Ted Lasso* and the Oscar-winning film *CODA*. Most recently, Apple won 22 awards at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Even though Apple TV has received praise, it has significantly fewer subscribers than Netflix – about one-tenth as many – and ranks lowest among the leading streaming services in that regard. If Apple believes removing the “Plus” option will help them attract more subscribers, that’s a good strategy. Ultimately, consistently creating high-quality content will bring in viewers.
