When contemplating the internet in the 1990s, a distinct sound echoes in our minds – a sound that can’t be put into words but easily imitated vocally. It’s that well-known, shrill noise of dial-up connections that would monopolize your phone line, enabling you to access the web. The speed was far from impressive, yet it managed for message boards and chat rooms. Despite advancements in high-speed internet, AOL’s dial-up service persisted and will cease operation on September 30.
Indeed, it’s true that some individuals continue to rely on dial-up internet connections in the year 2025 for various reasons. For one group of people, nostalgia and familiarity play a significant role; they have been using this service since its inception in 1991 and, if their internet usage is not heavy, it may still serve them adequately today. However, for those who are not avid internet users, the impending closure of AOL dial-up will soon force them to seek alternative means of connectivity. Furthermore, individuals residing in extremely remote regions where broadband access is unavailable will also have to find new solutions due to the upcoming termination of AOL dial-up service.
AOL announced that it will stop offering its Dial-up Internet service in the future. This means that starting from September 30, 2025, you won’t find this service in AOL plans anymore. To make way for newer technologies, the software used to access this service, specifically the AOL Dialer and AOL Shield browser, will also be discontinued. These tools are designed for older operating systems and dial-up internet connections.
Truly, this marks a significant change. Yet, the melodies, delights, and tribulations of our dial-up internet days will forever remain etched in our memories.
