Anthony Mackie Teases Captain America vs. Evil Steve Rogers: ‘Like De Niro & Pacino in Heat’

This coming Friday, Anthony Mackie will make his debut as Captain America in his first standalone movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World“. In this film, Sam Wilson will face off against Red Hulk and establish the foundation for the upcoming version of the Avengers. Notably, Mackie’s character has been confirmed to lead the team as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) readies itself for a multiversal battle against Doctor Doom.

Nevertheless, the situation becomes more intricate as Chris Evans is reportedly set to star in “Avengers: Doomsday”, and there are robust whispers hinting at his potential comeback, this time possibly as an alternate version of Captain America.

If this proves true, Wilson may be forced to take on his former mentor in an intense confrontation.

Mackie compared the upcoming conflict to the memorable confrontation between Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in the movie “Heat”. As he put it, “It reminds me of the fight scene between Iron Man and Captain America in ‘Civil War’. There’s a unique camaraderie between these two characters, similar to that between Cap and Bucky. That’s what I’m most looking forward to – the opportunity to portray this interaction rather than engaging in a physical battle.

In the alternate plot line, Iron Man remains a key character. With Robert Downey Jr.’s reappearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor Von Doom, it’s possible that Wilson could encounter an old friend turned foe. Even though Stark has assumed a villainous role, Wilson continues to have connections with Stark Industries.

Mackie pointed out that Sam Wilson is still on good terms with Tony Stark. This is because a significant portion of his initial technology originated from Stark Industries. However, the latest suit he uses was developed in Wakanda. It’s essentially like he receives the suit from Stark, then takes it to Wakanda for upgrades.

Mackie also commented on his future as both Avenger and Captain America:

It seems to me there’s a thin boundary between embodying Captain America and being part of the Avengers team. I believe his leadership skills would make him an excellent Avenger. His military background gives him the strategic prowess, while his role as a counselor equips him with the emotional intelligence to communicate effectively and diffuse tense situations.
