Anthony Joshua, the former heavyweight boxing champion, was in a car accident in Nigeria on Monday. Reports from local authorities and witnesses say two people died in the crash, and Joshua sustained minor injuries.
The accident happened around 11 a.m. on the crowded Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Joshua was in a Lexus SUV that hit a truck parked on the side of the road. He was traveling with three other people in the SUV, and his security team was following close behind in another vehicle.
According to traffic officials who spoke with the BBC, the Lexus was going too fast and the driver lost control while trying to pass another vehicle. Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that Joshua was one of five people in the crash, and sadly, two people died.
According to the Corps, the crash happened because the driver was speeding and improperly overtaking another vehicle – both serious traffic offenses that continue to be major factors in deadly road accidents on Nigerian roads.
Shehu Mohammed, speaking for the Federal Road Safety Corps, expressed deep sympathy to the families who lost loved ones and wished injured boxer Anthony Joshua a quick recovery.
Anthony Joshua has been taken to the hospital following an incident, as seen in the video below. There’s been a delay in getting an ambulance to the scene, and many are questioning why there’s no immediate emergency response team available on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, leading to concerns about the value placed on people’s lives.

As a film buff, I was reading about the accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Apparently, the speed limit there is 50 mph. From what witnesses told Punch newspaper, Joshua was riding in the backseat of an SUV with three other people. His security team was right behind them in a separate Pajero.
According to one witness, they and other people at the scene started rescuing those involved and signaled for help from passing cars. Federal Road Safety Corps officials arrived a few minutes later.
Video from the location showed Joshua looking confused and hurt, with the two people who died lying close by.
Joshua, age 36, recently went back to Nigeria, reconnecting with his family’s history in Sagamu, Ogun State. He went to school in Ikenne, a town about 53 miles from where the accident happened, before returning to the UK when he was 12 years old. A family member shared with the BBC their hopes for his quick recovery and offered prayers for those who died.
