Anthony Hopkins shared that two movies almost caused him to retire from acting, even after working in the industry for over 50 years.
Anthony Hopkins is most famous for playing Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs. His terrifying and clever depiction of the serial killer is considered a landmark performance and won him an Academy Award, solidifying his legacy as one of cinema’s greats.
Wow, everyone absolutely loved his performance! I mean, people were saying how truly terrifying and intense he was as the character – it was amazing. And the movie itself? Huge success! It actually won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and a lot of people consider it one of the greatest thrillers ever made. I totally agree!
Even though Silence of the Lambs was a huge success, Anthony Hopkins found the following years difficult. He starred in films like Meet Joe Black (1998) and Titus (1999), but didn’t feel a strong connection to either role. Looking back, he described acting during that time as upsetting and unfulfilling, feeling like a waste of his life.
Struggling to detach from demanding characters, especially Hannibal Lecter, and feeling uninspired by some of his work, he thought about quitting acting.
Despite facing personal challenges, Anthony Hopkins consistently delivered excellent performances. He earned praise and Academy Award nominations for films such as The Remains of the Day (1993) and Nixon (1995), demonstrating that his skill hadn’t faded. However, feeling detached from some of his roles led him to reconsider his career path.
Anthony Hopkins has made a strong comeback to acting, achieving significant success in recent years. He won his second Academy Award for Best Actor in 2021 for the film The Father, a moving psychological drama also starring Olivia Colman. He’s also received critical acclaim for his work in Westworld, King Lear, and the 2019 film The Two Popes.
