In his new memoir, We Did OK, Kid, Anthony Hopkins shares a deeply personal story about his strained relationship with his daughter, Abigail. The 87-year-old actor details their long period of distance and reflects on the difficulties they faced, as revealed in the book and recent interviews promoting it.

Hopkins describes the difficult decision to leave his first wife, Petronella Barker, shortly after their daughter was born. He admits he was battling alcohol issues and says their relationship was strained right from the beginning.

He describes a turning point happening after he got back from filming in Scotland. He writes that during their last argument, he felt a level of disgust he’d never experienced before, and became worried for both his and her safety, leading to physical aggression for the first time.

In his memoir, Hopkins explains that he accepts his daughter’s inability to forgive him for leaving when she was a baby, acknowledging she had valid reasons. However, he also believes that remaining in the family would have been even more damaging.

After being sober for almost fifty years, Hopkins has been happily married to Stella since 2003. He holds no resentment towards his daughter and expresses a desire for her well-being. “I want her to know my door is always open, and I just want her to be happy and healthy,” he shares.

Hopkins recently faced criticism for comments he made while discussing his new book. He stated bluntly, “You need to move on. If you can’t, that’s okay, but I wish you the best.” He also added that he doesn’t regret his past actions, saying, “I did what I could, and that’s all there is to it.” When asked if he wanted his daughter to read the book, he refused to answer, explaining he didn’t want to cause her any pain.
