Okay, so this is huge news for us Helldivers fans! Sony and PlayStation are actually making a live-action movie based on the game, and they’ve got Justin Lin – the guy who directed a bunch of the Fast & Furious movies – directing it. I’m seriously hyped to see how this turns out!
Lin is producing the film through his production company, Perfect Storm Entertainment. Hutch Parker will also produce, alongside Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions. Gary Dauberman, known for his work on movies like It and Annabelle, wrote the screenplay.
The information comes from details shared by Sony and PlayStation Productions shared by THR.
Helldivers is a cooperative shooter game originally released in 2015 by Arrowhead Game Studios. It first launched on PlayStation consoles and was later made available on PC. In the game, players take on the role of the Helldivers, an elite military team tasked with safeguarding Super Earth and upholding a system of government they refer to as ‘managed democracy’ throughout the galaxy.
The game was a hit with both critics and players, selling millions of copies. A follow-up game was released in early 2024, revitalizing the series. It’s known for its fast-paced, unpredictable missions where anything can happen – including accidentally hitting your teammates! This encourages players to coordinate and work closely together. Before each battle, players customize their loadout, choose their landing spot, and utilize special tools called stratagems to gain an edge.
Sony and PlayStation are putting a lot of effort into turning their popular video games into TV shows and movies. They’ve already had success with the Uncharted film, which earned over $400 million globally. PlayStation Productions is also responsible for the Twisted Metal series on Peacock and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us on HBO.
