As a cinephile, I must share my thoughts on the recent decision by Disney to axe their planned live-action remake of the iconic 1970 animated film “The Aristocats.” Directed by none other than Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, this project was highly anticipated. However, in a twist of fate, it seems that the production has been put on hold. In my humble opinion, this could turn out to be a fortunate turn of events.
The beloved tale of an aristocratic feline family and their journey through jazz-age Paris holds a special place in many hearts. Revisiting such a classic with a modern twist would undoubtedly be challenging for any director, but Questlove’s unique style seemed like the perfect fit. Yet, I believe that allowing this timeless story to continue resonating as it is – in its original, animated form – may prove even more enchanting than attempting to reimagine it through live-action lenses.
Let us appreciate the beauty of the 1970 classic and eagerly await what other magical stories Disney has in store for us in the future!
The project was initially unveiled in the year 2023, with Questlove planned as the director for a tale centered around a group of Parisian felines who were abducted by a covetous butler, intending to seize their fortune.
After a new administration took over, he said, “Alright, this is my strategy, let me show you the steps, followed by a performance, some melodies for illustration, and an ensemble I’m collaborating with – here’s the rundown.
After another round of organizational changes, they seemed to say, “Alright then.” By the third change, I found myself thinking, “Perhaps this isn’t the right fit, given that there are numerous opportunities available for me at the moment.
Despite expressing his wish to undertake that particular project, Questlove mentioned that there are numerous other possibilities in store for him. He explained, “There’s approximately 20 more I can reach… there are literally four other films. I’ll be occupied till around 2029 or 2030. So, it just wasn’t destined to occur. Perhaps it will happen later on.
The live-action adaptation of this project was initially unveiled in January 2022, with Will Gluck taking up production duties under his Olive Bridge Entertainment label and Keith Bunin being assigned the task of writing the screenplay. Later in March 2023, Questlove joined as the director.
After the latest update in August 2025, it’s clear the project will not move forward for now.
Enthusiasts eager for a fresh take on The Aristocats, the beloved animated tale, will have to be patient. However, Questlove has subtly suggested that the concept might be revisited down the line. For now, it appears the director is fully engrossed in various other film projects, implying that this specific project seems to be on hold for the time being.
