The movie follows pop star Mother Mary as she reconnects with her old best friend and costume designer, Sam Anselm, right before making her return to the stage. This reunion brings up painful memories from their past.

In Vogue’s August 2025 issue, Hathaway discussed her latest role, describing her character as a blend of Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. The character revisits a friendship with someone who supported her when her career was struggling.

She explained that taking on the role of a pop star required her to embrace being a novice. She found a surprising freedom in accepting that she wouldn’t be immediately good at everything, and that it was okay to struggle and learn. It meant letting go of old expectations, which was challenging but ultimately a positive and necessary part of the process, like many significant life changes.

The movie Mother Mary will debut in select cinemas on April 17th, and then become available across the country on April 24th. Audiences can anticipate a powerful exploration of the ups and downs of celebrity, driven by Anne Hathaway’s performance and the film’s striking musical sequences.
