Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland Star in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in Stunning New Look at The Movie

Entertainment Weekly has revealed the first photos of Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland as Penelope and Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, generating excitement among fans.

This movie is based on the famous Greek story of Odysseus. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, a hero struggling to return home after years of fighting in the Trojan War, facing many perils along the way.

Christopher Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas, are producing a new film called The Odyssey through their production company, Syncopy. The movie boasts a remarkable cast, featuring Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Circe, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus. Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, and Lupita Nyong’o also star, along with a number of other well-known actors in supporting roles.

Christopher Nolan started working on his film, The Odyssey, in March 2024 and finalized a deal with Universal Pictures by October. Matt Damon was confirmed to play the lead role of Odysseus in February 2025, and the movie was filmed between February and August in various locations around the world, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara.

As a film critic, I have to say this latest from Nolan is a technical marvel. It’s his most ambitious project to date, and also his most expensive – reportedly costing around $250 million to make. What’s truly remarkable is that the entire film was shot using IMAX 70mm cameras, a first for Nolan, and it really shows. The visual scope is just breathtaking.

The story follows Odysseus’s long journey home to his wife, Penelope, as he encounters fantastical creatures like the one-eyed giant Polyphemus, the captivating Sirens, and the powerful sorceress Circe.

I’m really excited about this movie! Tom Holland is playing Odysseus’ son, Telemachus, and he seems so determined. And Anne Hathaway is perfect as Penelope – you can really feel her struggle between hoping her husband will return and fearing for her safety and home in Ithaca. Nolan has said Odysseus is an incredible strategist, a really clever and resourceful guy, and that definitely comes through in the way the story is unfolding.

The movie will come out in the U.S. on July 17, 2026, in IMAX, IMAX 70 mm, and other high-quality large-screen formats. Tickets for some IMAX 70 mm showings went on sale a year early and quickly sold out, often within hours.

As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about The Odyssey. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a visually stunning film – packed with action, fantastical elements, and a strong connection to the classic Greek myths. Most importantly, it sounds like they’re respecting the heart of Homer’s incredible story of Odysseus.
