As a follower who values respect and professionalism in the film industry, I find Anna Kendrick‘s recent experiences with certain directors to be disheartening. It’s sad to see such talented individuals being treated unfairly and unprofessionally on set. The incident involving the director who humiliated her for no valid reason is a clear example of abusive power dynamics that should have no place in any creative space.
Anna Kendrick reflects back on an instance where a movie director unfairly portrayed her and humiliated her, surrounded by numerous extras on the film set. In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she shared this uncomfortable experience.
In the midst of filming a scene filled with around a hundred extras, Kendrick’s director instructed her to ad-lib. Following his instruction, she did so, but the director abruptly called for a halt and criticized her performance without explanation, saying it was unwarranted. This left Kendrick feeling humiliated, as she found this behavior unjustified.
She mentioned that it seemed like an intentional attempt to make her feel humiliated, thereby asserting control over the situation, which was quite uncomfortable for her.
Eventually, the impromptu scene she acted out was featured in the movie’s promotional trailer, leading Kendrick to feel furious about the whole situation. When recounting the event, she chose not to reveal the director’s name or the title of the film. In response, the actress from Twilight retorted, “And then what I came up with wound up in the trailer. So, you know, stick it to you!
In the meantime, Kendrick assumes command as the captain by making her first appearance as a film director in Woman of the Hour, a movie written by Ian McDonald. This American crime thriller was released in 2023 and is based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, who continued his murder spree while participating in the sitcom The Dating Game.
The movie narrative goes like this: “Sheryl Bradshaw, a woman seeking love on a popular ’70s television program, selects Rodney Alcala, a seemingly charming bachelor. However, she doesn’t realize that beneath his kind exterior, he conceals a chilling secret which is potentially lethal.
Anna Kendrick takes on the character of Sheryl Bradshaw, a contestant, while Daniel Zovatto portrays Alcala. Additionally, Nicolette Robinson and Tony Hale are also in the cast. “Woman of the Hour” had its debut on September 8, 2023, at the Toronto International Film Festival held in Canada. The film became available for streaming on Netflix starting October 18, 2024.
