I’ve been really struck by what Jennifer Aniston recently said. She’s concerned about a worrying pattern she’s noticing in the entertainment world and how it impacts our ability to speak openly. It feels important to me that someone with her platform is bringing attention to this.
In a recent interview with Elle magazine for their Women in Hollywood issue, the actress expressed concern that ABC’s decision to temporarily remove Jimmy Kimmel from the air following his comments about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was “very dangerous.”
Jennifer Aniston, a longtime friend of Jimmy Kimmel, expressed concern that the situation highlights how difficult it’s becoming to have open discussions. In an interview with Elle, she said, “We’re seeing things happen that are shocking and worrying. It’s a dangerous and sad situation.” She added that ultimately, viewers have the power because they choose which networks and streaming services to support, and the recent wave of subscription cancellations clearly demonstrated that power.
The Friends star was referring to the backlash that followed Kimmel’s brief suspension in September.
According to research from Antenna, Disney+ and Hulu experienced a significant increase in cancellations last month. Disney+ lost around 8% of its U.S. subscribers, and Hulu’s cancellation rate jumped to 10%. These rates were approximately twice as high as they were in the previous two months.
Jimmy Kimmel apologized when he returned to his show on September 23rd, stating he didn’t intend to downplay the tragic murder of a young man. Even though his time off air was short, it caused significant outrage in Hollywood.
Jennifer Aniston believes the problem is bigger than just a specific TV network or disagreement. She feels people have forgotten how to truly connect and understand one another.
She explained that we need to hear all perspectives. “We’ve stopped truly communicating,” she said, “and learning from each other through productive conversations. People seem unwilling to compromise, and that approach just isn’t effective.”
