As a critic, I’ve always found that the best anime battles aren’t just about flashy fights – they’re fueled by something deeper. Political maneuvering and backroom deals often create the most compelling conflicts. These shows brilliantly demonstrate how failed diplomacy and power grabs can spiral out of control, leading to incredible wars fought with everything from giant robots to powerful magic. What follows isn’t just action, but a tense, gripping story built on complex rivalries and culminating in truly spectacular combat. I’m excited to share some series that really nail this dynamic.
‘Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion’ (2006–2008)

Lelouch vi Britannia starts a revolution against the powerful Britannian Empire, hoping to build a better future for his sister. He uses a special ability called Geass to control people, all while dealing with tricky politics and military plans. What begins as small fights quickly grows into huge battles with giant robots, involving countries from around the world. The war is marked by shifting alliances, unexpected betrayals, and clever strategies as the Black Knights fight against the empire’s forces.
‘Attack on Titan’ (2013–2023)

People are struggling to survive against giant, human-eating creatures, but they soon discover a hidden plot involving their own government and other countries. The soldiers fighting the giants, known as the Survey Corps, realize their enemies aren’t just monsters – they’re people with different beliefs. As the conflict grows, it shifts from a simple fight for survival to political power struggles and international war. Eventually, one soldier, Eren Yeager, sets in motion a dangerous plan that forces the entire world to band together against a shared enemy.
‘Legend of the Galactic Heroes’ (1988–1997)

For a hundred years, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance have been locked in a massive war fueled by their very different ideas about how a galaxy should be governed. Reinhard von Lohengramm wants to bring the entire galaxy under a single, powerful ruler, while Yang Wen-li fights to protect a democratic system, even though it has flaws. Huge space battles aren’t just about military strategy; they mirror the political struggles happening among the leaders on both sides, with each tactical decision reflecting the larger debate between dictatorship and democracy.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ (1979–1980)

The Principality of Zeon starts a war to become independent from the Earth Federation, using powerful new mobile suits. Amuro Ray fights back as a pilot of the Gundam, struggling with the realities of war and the manipulation of information. The conflict centers on the fight for freedom by people living in space who feel controlled by Earth’s government. This series is famous for launching the ‘real robot’ genre, emphasizing realistic military details and political conflicts.
‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ (2009–2010)

Edward and Alphonse Elric discover a massive conspiracy within Amestris’s military government. The nation’s leaders are secretly sacrificing their own people to power a dangerous, age-old alchemical plan, and they’re also starting wars with countries like Ishval. Eventually, different groups within the military rebel to take down the powerful, inhuman being who’s really in charge. The climax is a huge, complex battle that mixes alchemy and traditional warfare.
‘Kingdom’ (2012–Present)

Xin is determined to become a legendary general in ancient China, a time of constant warfare. He allies himself with Ei Sei, a young king who wants to unite the country through force. However, their military efforts are constantly jeopardized by power struggles and scheming within the royal court. Huge armies battle for control, and the outcome of these conflicts – and the fate of entire kingdoms – depends on the strength of their leaders and the courage of their soldiers.
‘Vinland Saga’ (2019–2023)

Driven by a desire to avenge his father, Thorfinn finds himself caught in the midst of Denmark’s invasion of England. The story follows Prince Canute as he changes and fights to become king, showcasing the harsh realities of power and inheritance. Viking warriors act as hired soldiers, entangled in shifting loyalties and backstabbing between European rulers. Over time, the focus moves from Thorfinn’s personal quest for revenge to the larger struggle of creating a perfect country through political maneuvering.
‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex’ (2002–2003)

In a future where technology and government are deeply connected, Section 9 tackles cybercrime and terrorism. Led by Major Motoko Kusanagi, the team combats hackers and dishonest officials who exploit the system to conceal their activities. A case known as the Laughing Man incident uncovers a large-scale conspiracy involving powerful corporations, the government, and the medical field. Through a mix of tactical missions and espionage, Section 9 works to dismantle widespread corruption within Japan.
‘The Heroic Legend of Arslan’ (2015)

After a shocking betrayal leads to his kingdom of Pars falling to the fanatical forces of Lusitania, Prince Arslan is forced to escape. He then embarks on a quest to reclaim his homeland, building a varied alliance and fighting to end slavery. The story centers on the challenges of building an army and the importance of winning over the people through political change. Battles are won not just through strength, but through clever use of the land and the strategic brilliance of Arslan’s advisor, Narsus.
‘Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic’ (2012–2014)

Aladdin and Alibaba journey across the world, investigating ancient ruins and trying to understand the magic that shapes their world. Different countries are locked in a struggle for power and wealth, while also facing problems like poverty and inequality. The Kou Empire wants to conquer and unite the world, while the Sindria Kingdom believes in building alliances. As magic grows stronger, conflicts escalate, with entire armies clashing and representing different ways of life and beliefs.
‘Gate’ (2015–2016)

As a huge cinema fan, I was immediately hooked by this premise: imagine a gateway suddenly appearing in Tokyo, and soldiers just pouring out of it, like straight out of a fantasy novel! It’s about how Japan’s Self-Defense Forces respond – they don’t just panic, they fight back and set up a base to try and talk to whoever’s on the other side of this… ‘gate.’ It’s fascinating to watch because modern weapons are obviously incredibly effective against swords and magic, but the real story is about the politics. It’s not just about winning battles; it’s about dealing with other countries and, crucially, trying to understand a completely different civilization. We follow a character named Itami, who’s stuck balancing fighting and trying to build some kind of relationship with these people from another world – a really tough job, and a great setup for some compelling drama.
‘Aldnoah.Zero’ (2014–2015)

After discovering ancient technology on Mars called Aldnoah, humanity divides into two civilizations. The Martian Vers Empire launches an attack on Earth, quickly taking control of cities with powerful, advanced mechs. Inaho Kaizuka fights back, using clever tactics to overcome the Martian forces. The war is complicated by political intrigue, including attempts at assassination and struggles for power, as different groups on both sides either seek a peaceful resolution or complete victory.
’86 EIGHTY-SIX’ (2021–2022)

San Magnolia is at war, but instead of sending its own citizens to fight, it uses a group called the 86 – a discriminated minority – to pilot all the drones. Lena Milizé leads these drone pilots from a safe location, and as she does, she begins to realize the government is spreading lies to make people see the 86 as less than human. The story explores the problems with official discrimination and the moral questions raised by fighting wars from a distance. Every battle is a brutal fight for survival against a never-ending wave of robotic enemies.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans’ (2015–2017)

On Mars, a diplomat trying to break away from Earth is protected by child soldiers working for a security firm. Meanwhile, a group called Tekkadan climbs from humble beginnings to become a powerful force by getting involved in political conflicts. The series follows their rise alongside growing problems within the ruling organization, Gjallarhorn, which is plagued by corruption and ultimately faces internal conflict and revolt. A central theme is the devastating impact of war, particularly on young people who are manipulated and exploited by those in power.
‘Overlord’ (2015–2022)

Ainz Ooal Gown is unexpectedly transported to another world and becomes the powerful leader of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. He uses incredible magic and clever planning to grow his power and control nearby kingdoms. The story focuses on how a conqueror changes existing governments to take over, with his loyal followers leading devastating military attacks against human forces.
‘Saga of Tanya the Evil’ (2017)

After dying, a cold-hearted businessman is reborn as a young girl in a magical version of World War I Europe. This girl, Tanya Degurechaff, quickly becomes a powerful soldier, using both her magical abilities and understanding of modern warfare to climb the ranks. The nation she serves is surrounded by enemies and constantly faces problems caused by poor political decisions, leading to increasingly dangerous battles. The war is defined by magical aerial combat and devastating bombing raids that change how fighting is done in the trenches.
‘Record of Grancrest War’ (2018)

I’m completely hooked on this story! It’s about a continent where powerful lords rule, each with a unique crest that gives them incredible abilities. This guy, Theo Cornaro, takes a crest hoping to free his home, but it quickly spirals into a massive war for control of everything. Honestly, the politics are insane – lords are constantly making and breaking promises, marrying off their kids as bargaining chips, and stabbing each other in the back for land. It all leads to huge battles filled with magic and soldiers, all fighting over who will be the one to rule as emperor and bring a new order to the land. It’s a wild ride!
‘Akame ga Kill!’ (2014)

I recently dove into this anime, and it’s seriously gripping! It follows Tatsumi, who ends up joining Night Raid, a team of assassins with the goal of taking down a really corrupt Prime Minister who’s basically pulling the strings of the young Emperor. The whole country is suffering – taxes are insane, and the laws are enforced with extreme brutality, which has led to a full-blown rebellion. Night Raid’s strategy is to eliminate the people in power, weakening the government from the inside. What makes the fights so awesome is that everyone wields these incredibly powerful, ancient weapons called Imperial Arms, which give them almost supernatural abilities. It’s a wild ride!
‘Mobile Suit Gundam 00’ (2007–2009)

Celestial Being is a powerful military group that tries to end war by overpowering opposing forces. Their four Gundam pilots specifically target the military resources of the world’s three largest superpowers, hoping to unite all of humanity. In response, the nations of the world team up to destroy the Gundams and take control of their advanced technology. This intervention sparks conflict and confusion as global leaders debate the true motives behind Celestial Being’s actions.
‘Psycho-Pass’ (2012–2013)

In Japan, the Sibyl System controls society by constantly analyzing the thoughts and potential for crime in every person. Akane Tsunemori is a law enforcement inspector who begins to doubt whether it’s right to pre-judge people, even if it’s for the sake of public safety. Those who oppose the system, through acts of terrorism and political protest, directly target the technology that powers it. This creates a conflict that isn’t just about physical force, but a deeper debate about how much security we should trade for individual freedom, all fought with advanced technology.
