Japanese anime often includes a wide range of supporting characters who are crucial to the main characters’ success. These figures, with their special abilities and distinct personalities, add depth to the story, even though they aren’t the main focus. They frequently serve as guides or steadfast friends, helping the heroes face challenges. This list highlights anime series featuring prominent Black characters who consistently play these supporting or sidekick roles.

Mr. Popo has lived at the Lookout for a long time and helps Kami, the Earth’s deity. He takes care of the temple and protects its sacred areas. Throughout many adventures, he trains the heroes, preparing them to fight powerful enemies. He knows the Lookout and the Dragon Balls incredibly well, making him a valuable ally. Though he’s always there to offer guidance and support, he remains a supporting character rather than the main focus of the story.

Kaname Tosen initially appears as the captain of the ninth division of the Gotei 13, but later sides with the villain Sosuke Aizen. He believes joining Aizen will ultimately lead to genuine justice and peace. Throughout the story, Tosen primarily functions as a supporting antagonist, challenging the heroes’ ideals and remaining deeply loyal to Aizen. His character develops through his interactions with the main characters, rather than having a story arc of his own.

He’s basically support for the main students, always there to back them up and bring some specialized firepower. He’s a solid fighter, no doubt, but he’s definitely not the main focus.
