‘Afro Samurai’ (2007)

‘Black Lagoon’ (2006)

As a huge fan of the series, I’ve always been fascinated by Dutch. He’s the brains behind the Lagoon Company, captaining their boat and keeping everything running smoothly. What really stands out is his background – a Vietnam vet who’s seen it all, and now expertly navigates the incredibly dangerous world of Roanapur. He’s not just brawn, though; Dutch is seriously intelligent and a master at keeping the peace between his, let’s just say, passionate crew. I also appreciate that the writers avoided clichés with his character, making him a genuinely skilled strategist. It’s no surprise he’s so popular with cosplayers – his look is just so cool, gritty, and feels really authentic.

‘Soul Eater’ (2008–2009)

Kilik Rung is a highly skilled student at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, fighting with a pair of gauntlets that control the elements. He’s a brave and energetic fighter, always stepping up against enemies. The character was intentionally created to bring more diversity to the series, with a design inspired by hip-hop culture. ‘My Hero Academia’ (2016–Present)

Rumi Usagiyama, better known as the hero Mirko, is one of the most highly-ranked professional heroes. She’s easily recognized by her dark skin and strong physique. Mirko is famous for her fierce, solo fighting style – she prefers to work alone. Another notable hero, Rock Lock, is deeply devoted to his family and often plays a key part in major battles. Both characters help create a diverse group of heroes dedicated to protecting people from villains. Mirko’s striking design quickly made her a popular choice for cosplay fans.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ (2022)

Maine leads a group of mercenaries in Night City and becomes a mentor to the main character. He’s a physically imposing man with extensive cybernetic enhancements, and he deeply values loyalty. I’m completely fascinated by Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride! She’s so central to everything happening at Ohtori Academy, practically the key to all the duels. It’s amazing to learn she’s of Indian descent, and while she’s often quiet, she’s actually holding onto so many secrets that unlock the whole story. What I really appreciate is how she breaks away from the typical ‘damsel in distress’ character; she’s clearly been through a lot, but she’s also incredibly strong and takes control of her own destiny. As a dark-skinned woman, seeing her as such a powerful figure in a magical girl series feels truly revolutionary. And honestly, the connection she shares with Utena is at the heart of what makes the show so meaningful.

‘Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water’ (1990–1991)

Nadia is a young circus performer with a mysterious past and a dream of returning to her African homeland. She soon learns she’s connected to the lost civilization of Atlantis and possesses the knowledge to activate incredible ancient technology. The series, directed by Hideaki Anno, follows Nadia as she openly expresses her commitment to peace. Throughout her journey, Nadia grapples with issues of trust and figuring out who she truly is, making her a remarkably layered character. Notably, she’s considered one of the first and most important Black protagonists in anime.

‘Durarara!!’ (2010)

I’m totally fascinated by Simon Brezhnev! He’s this incredible sushi chef in Ikebukuro, and what’s really cool is he’s Russian but of African descent. He’s also unbelievably strong – like, he can stop fights with just his strength! But here’s the thing, he’s a total pacifist and really tries to talk things out or just offer people food. He’s basically this gentle giant who brings a lot of the different stories together, and everyone just loves him. He’s such a unique and friendly character, he really stands out!

‘Kill la Kill’ (2013–2014)

As a film and anime fan, I’m always fascinated by unique characters, and Ira Gamagoori is definitely one of those. He’s the head of Honnouji Academy’s Disciplinary Committee, and incredibly devoted to Satsuki Kiryuin. He’s a huge guy with darker skin, and basically runs the school with a strict, no-nonsense attitude. What’s really cool is his uniform – it transforms into this incredibly detailed, almost bondage-inspired armor that lets him take a beating and hit back even harder! He’s often used for comedic effect because he takes everything so seriously, but don’t let that fool you – he’s a seriously powerful fighter. I’ve noticed a lot of cosplayers love tackling his character, though recreating his size and all those armor changes must be a real challenge!

‘Dragon Ball GT’ (1996–1997)

Uub is a young boy originally from a tropical village and the human form of the once-evil Majin Buu. He becomes a student of Goku and represents the future of Earth’s protectors, possessing incredible hidden strength. While the series he first appeared in (GT) isn’t always considered official, Uub’s introduction in Z and his overall role in the Dragon Ball story are important. He also marked a significant moment for representation, becoming a hero of color in a globally popular anime.

‘Neo Yokio’ (2017)

Kaz Kaan is a powerful figure in a futuristic New York City, living a double life as a demon hunter and a member of high society. Voiced by Jaden Smith, the show explores themes of wealth and sadness, drawing heavily from anime styles and storytelling. Kaz is a unique character – a successful, wealthy Black protagonist, a refreshing change from typical stories about underdogs. He’s easily recognized by his signature pink hair and suit, which have become iconic to fans.

‘Banana Fish’ (2018)

Cain Blood leads the Black Sabbath gang in New York and unexpectedly becomes an ally to Ash Lynx. He’s a calm and clever leader who prioritizes protecting his gang and their territory. The series explores complex issues and realistically depicts the dangerous world of gangs, and Cain is a standout character because people respect his power and leadership skills, not just his strength.

‘Berserk’ (1997)

Casca is a powerful and highly skilled commander within the Band of the Hawk mercenary group. She earns the respect of her fellow soldiers and Griffith by breaking down traditional barriers of gender and social class. Her connection with Guts is central to the emotional impact of the Golden Age story arc. Musa Kamara, a student from Tanzania, joined the university’s track team even though he’d never run before. He’s a considerate and thoughtful person, often helping to calm down disagreements within the team. Musa faces the challenge of being expected to be a fast runner simply because of his background. The story explores his inner thoughts and portrays him as a complex individual. Ultimately, it’s a story about his personal development and finding a sense of community in a new country.

‘Turn A Gundam’ (1999–2000)

As a huge fan of Gundam, I’ve always been fascinated by Loran Cehack. He’s the pilot of the main mobile suit, and what really strikes me is how he connects both the Earth and Moon races. He’s a true pacifist – he doesn’t want to start fights, he wants to stop them, and uses the Gundam’s incredible power to do just that. Plus, he’s a really refreshing character; one of the few main heroes in the whole franchise with darker skin. His kindness and somewhat gender-neutral design make him stand out from the usual tough-guy mecha pilots. He’s just a genuinely unique character who believes in understanding others instead of simply destroying them.

‘Lycoris Recoil’ (2022)

Mika runs the LycoReco café and used to train assassins. He’s a father figure to the main characters and hides his impressive fighting skills behind a limp. As a Black man living in Japan, Mika fully embraces the local culture, often wearing traditional clothes. He provides essential wisdom and guidance to Chisato and Takina, and his warm, protective personality grounds the show’s everyday moments.

‘Attack on Titan’ (2013–2023)

Onyankopon is a skilled pilot from another country who joins forces with the Scouts to fight the Titans. He’s deeply religious and believes that differences between people – like skin color – are a beautiful part of life’s design. In a dark and often hopeless story, his thoughtful explanation of diversity stands out as a moment of genuine humanity. He’s shown to be a capable airship mechanic and operator, and serves as a reminder that a larger world exists beyond the walls of Paradis Island.
