Anime That Gave Us a Dark-Skinned Black Male Lead Who Wins the Girl

I’ve been so thrilled to see how anime representation has changed! It’s amazing to finally see more diverse characters, and I especially love spotting strong, dark-skinned or Black male leads. For a long time, characters of color were often given tragic storylines, but now I’m really enjoying series where these men find genuine happiness, especially in their love lives. It’s fantastic to see them as heroes, being both action-oriented and having fulfilling relationships. I’ve been keeping track of some really memorable men of color who’ve found love, and I’m excited to share those titles!

‘Turn A Gundam’ (1999–2000)

Loran Cehack is the main pilot in the story and stands out from most heroes in this series. As a member of the Moonrace, he becomes fiercely loyal to Queen Dianna Soriel during the war with Earth. The story ends with Loran and Dianna happily retired, living a simple life together in a country cabin. His steadfast devotion and kind personality earn him the peaceful life he desires with the woman he loves.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ (2022)

Maine leads the mercenary group and takes on a mentor role for David Martinez. He’s in a strong, loving relationship with Dorio, who fights by his side. Their close connection provides stability for both of them in the chaotic world of Night City and remains a powerful emotional center for the team throughout their story.

‘Tenjho Tenge’ (2004)

Bob Makihara is a powerful and recognizable member of the Juken Club, known for his strength and long dreadlocks. Throughout the intense martial arts competitions, he shares a strong and lasting relationship with Chiaki Kounoike. Their connection is a rare source of stability in a world of chaotic and often bizarre fighting tournaments. Bob demonstrates that even a fierce competitor can be a caring partner who always puts his girlfriend’s well-being first.

‘Space Runaway Ideon’ (1980–1981)

Jordan Bes, captain of the Solo Ship, is known for his afro and dark skin. He unexpectedly falls in love with Karala Ajiba, a princess from the Buff Clan—the opposing side in an intergalactic war. Their forbidden romance leads to the birth of their son, Messiah, and this relationship becomes a key element in the story’s journey toward a grand finale.

‘Sword Art Online’ (2012)

Andrew Gilbert Mills, known online as Agil, is a dependable player who excels as both a shopkeeper and a fighter in the game. He consistently supports the main characters and often shares glimpses of his life outside the virtual world. We learn that he’s happily married and co-owns a café with his wife. Agil represents a mature and responsible character motivated by his desire to return to her.

‘One Piece’ (1999–Present)

I’m a huge fan of Usopp, and his connection with Kaya is just so sweet! He’s the Straw Hats’ sniper, and he left Syrup Village wanting to become a true hero, hoping to impress her when he returned with all his stories. It’s amazing because Kaya is working hard to become a doctor so she can be there to take care of him when he does come back! Even though they’re miles apart, you can really feel how much they care for each other.

‘My Hero Academia’ (2016–2024)

I’m a huge fan of the hero Rock Lock, also known as Ken Takagi. What really stands out to me is his quirk – he can literally lock things in place! But beyond his powers, I love that the show portrays him as a genuinely happy family man. He’s a loving husband and father, and it’s clear he fights to create a safe future for them. It really emphasizes what’s at stake when the heroes face off against villains – it’s not just about saving the world, it’s about protecting the people he loves.

‘Shaman King’ (2001–2002)

Chocolove McDonell plays a comedian with a jaguar spirit who becomes a key character. At first, he’s haunted by his past, but he develops into a strong shaman dedicated to protecting the world. Later stories show he finds happiness, marrying and starting a family after the shaman tournament ends. His focus changes from making amends for his past to creating a future for his family.

‘Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic’ (2012–2013)

Masrur is a powerful warrior from the Fanalis tribe and a trusted advisor and fighter for Sinbad. He’s a man of few words, relying on his immense strength to defend his kingdom and those he cares about. Later in the story, he finds happiness in family life, marrying and having children. This peaceful side of him is a surprising contrast to his strong and imposing nature as a warrior.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans’ (2015–2017)

Naze Turbine leads the Turbine faction and is a mentor to the members of Tekkadan, acting like an older brother. He travels the stars with his large family, including his wife, Amida Arca, and other partners. Naze and Amida share a strong, loving, and equal partnership. He’s a notable example of a dark-skinned male character who successfully leads a large, complex family.

‘Carole & Tuesday’ (2019)

Ezekiel is a famous rapper with a hidden past and a connection to one of the main characters. He and Carole grew up together in an orphanage, and he still has feelings for her, even after becoming a star. The story follows his attempts to reconcile his public image with his desire to reconnect with Carole. In a dramatic turn, he’s willing to jeopardize everything he’s built to tell her how he truly feels.

‘Basquash!’ (2009)

Dan JD is a passionate and impulsive character who accidentally invents a thrilling new sport combining giant robots and basketball. As he strives to achieve his ambitions, he also deals with a society divided by class and pursues a relationship with Rouge. Their connection begins as a competitive rivalry, but gradually blossoms into a true romance. Ultimately, Dan both transforms the world of sports and wins the affection of the woman he loves.

‘Fairy Tail’ (2009–2019)

Ren Akatsuki is a member of the Blue Pegasus guild, known for his calm personality and tanned skin, which sets him apart from his more energetic guildmates. During a mission with the Lamia Scale guild, he develops a romantic relationship with Sherry Blendy. What starts as playful flirting on the battlefield blossoms into a full engagement by the series’ end, bringing Ren lasting happiness despite their guild affiliations.

‘Kill la Kill’ (2013–2014)

Ira Gamagori, a member of the Elite Four, is a physically imposing figure who maintains order through his strength. Throughout the series’ wild events, he forms a surprisingly tender and protective bond with Mako Mankanshoku. Many fans, and official artwork, suggest a romantic connection between them, as Gamagori consistently risks his own safety to protect her. Ultimately, he earns the affection of someone who was initially his opponent.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam SEED’ (2002–2003)

Dearka Elsman begins as an enemy pilot, fighting against the main characters. However, he later switches sides and joins their cause. He develops a close and heartfelt relationship with Miriallia Haw, even though he previously killed her partner in combat. Their connection starts with shared sorrow but grows into a real bond as the war continues. Ultimately, Dearka finds forgiveness and a sense of belonging by being open to new perspectives.

‘Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma’ (2015–2020)

I’m completely captivated by the character of Akira Hayama! He’s an incredible spice master who starts at culinary academy already ahead of the game thanks to his amazing sense of smell. But what really drives him isn’t just a love of food – it’s his deep gratitude and affection for Jun Shiomi, the woman who saved him from a really tough situation. He wants to become a phenomenal chef not for himself, but to prove how brilliant she is and make sure her name is remembered in the culinary world. Honestly, it’s a beautiful, all-consuming love story that shapes everything he does, and it’s just fascinating to watch unfold.

‘Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works]’ (2014–2015)

Archer is a skilled warrior with tanned skin and white hair, brought into the Holy Grail War to fight. As the story unfolds, we learn who he really is and about his complex history with Rin Tohsaka. Throughout the war, he protects Rin, questions her beliefs, and strengthens their connection. Ultimately, he entrusts Rin with the burden of his past, solidifying their bond.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam 00’ (2007–2009)

Lichtendahl Tsery is a mobile suit pilot and technical expert for Celestial Being. He’s known for being upbeat and develops a romantic relationship with Tsugumi Liu, the ship’s operator. During a dangerous attack, they share a heartfelt moment, confirming their love for each other. They ultimately face their final moments together, finding a bittersweet victory in their love amidst the chaos of war.

‘Michiko & Hatchin’ (2008–2009)

Hiroshi Morenos is a central figure in the story, being both the mysterious father of Michiko Malandro’s child and a former lover. Throughout the series, Michiko relentlessly searches for him, traveling across a vibrant, sun-drenched world fueled by memories of their intense past relationship. Through flashbacks and the unfolding story, it’s revealed that he truly captured her heart and fathered her child, and he remains Michiko’s ultimate romantic pursuit.

‘Afro Samurai’ (2007)

Afro is driven by revenge, but his past shows he wasn’t always a solitary figure. He once experienced a happy life with Jinno and her sister, before a terrible event destroyed their dojo. This brief period of peace proves Afro is capable of love and that he was loved in return. This hidden romance reveals a softer side to the seemingly cold and stoic warrior, making him a more complex character.
