Giant robot anime, or ‘mecha,’ is famous for its big battles and complicated technology. While many stories center on a single hero, several series now feature powerful teams of Black or dark-skinned pilots working together to protect their worlds. These duos offer fresh viewpoints and essential skills, often becoming the core of their military forces. Whether they’re experienced leaders or rising stars, these characters show that diversity is a crucial part of what makes the mecha genre so popular.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans’ (2015–2017)

Chad Chadan and Dante Mogro are dependable pilots for the Tekkadan mercenary group. They frequently fight side-by-side in customized mobile suits, protecting their teammates from enemy groups. Chad specializes in ground combat, while Dante offers technical skills and firepower during battles. Together, they contribute to the rich dynamic of the young soldiers fighting for freedom on Mars.
‘The Price of Smiles’ (2019)

Harold Miller and Blake Boyer are experienced pilots for the Grandiga Empire, known for their seamless teamwork. They pilot cutting-edge mechs and have a close, professional relationship that helps them endure the intense fighting between rival nations. Harold provides guidance, while Blake brings enthusiasm to their missions. Together, they represent the sacrifices and realities of war, seen through the eyes of dedicated, elite soldiers.
‘Eureka Seven’ (2005–2006)

Matthew and Hilda are part of the Gekkostate resistance, flying special vehicles called Terminus LFOs in high-speed dogfights. They’re a couple with a strong connection, making them a powerful team against enemy forces. Matthew is calm and skilled at coordinating support during tricky operations. Hilda’s strategic thinking helps protect the rest of the crew as they fight through dangerous areas.

Leon Kuze and Sharon Heim are top-level American test pilots sent to the Yukon Base for Blue Flag training exercises. Flying cutting-edge Raptor aircraft, they showcase their country’s advanced technology through realistic combat scenarios. Leon acts as a strong competitor to the main character, while Sharon is a reliable and professional teammate. They’ve worked together for years, united by a dedication to protecting Earth from an alien invasion.
’86 Eighty-Six’ (2021–2022)

Raiden Shuga and Brent Bernholdt are central figures in the Spearhead Squadron, piloting giant robots against the Legion’s drone army. Raiden, the vice captain, keeps his teammates focused and steady during the riskiest missions. Brent arrives later as a seasoned soldier, offering vital support with his no-nonsense approach. Together, they embody the courage and determination of pilots fighting for a nation that treats them unfairly.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury’ (2022–2023)

Ojelo Gabel and Nuno Marshall are students at Asticassia Tech who become pilots for the Earth House. They team up to break down social obstacles and demonstrate their skills in the academy’s competitive piloting duels. Ojelo naturally leads the Earthian students, while Nuno’s technical expertise keeps their mobile suits running. Their combined abilities are crucial for their house’s survival as conflicts grow between powerful corporations.
‘Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion’ (2006–2008)

Let me tell you, one of the things that really stood out to me in this series was the introduction of Villetta Nu and Dorothea Ernst. They’re both incredibly skilled, dark-skinned pilots fighting for the seemingly unstoppable Holy Britannian Empire. I watched Villetta start as a solid Sutherland pilot and really climb the ladder, eventually becoming a key player in how Britannia runs its colonies. Then, later on, Dorothea shows up as one of the Knights of the Round – basically, the Empire’s elite squad – piloting a seriously impressive, custom-built mecha during the war’s final battles. It wasn’t just cool to see these powerful women in action, but it also added a really interesting dynamic to the enemy forces – it made the heroes’ fight that much more complex.
‘Buddy Complex’ (2013)

Lee Conrad and Jarl Duran are experienced pilots for the Free Pact Alliance, flying Beryl units from the carrier ship Cygnus. Lee is a steady and reliable captain who mentors the newer pilots on their initial missions. Jarl is a seasoned veteran specializing in powerful attacks and frequently teams up with Lee to create a strong defense for their teammates. Together, they form a protective pair, safeguarding the crew from enemy attacks.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam SEED’ (2002–2003)

I’ve been following Dearka Elsman and Andrew Waltfeld for a while now, and their story is incredible. They started out as rivals, but eventually ended up fighting on the same side. Dearka was an amazing pilot who actually left his original team to help protect a neutral colony with the Archangel crew. And Andrew, known as the Desert Tiger, was thought lost after a huge battle, but he came back as a top pilot for the resistance! Together, they brought so much experience and skill to the fight, and honestly, I think their leadership was key to finally bringing an end to the war.
‘Turn A Gundam’ (1999–2000)

Loran Cehack and Poe Aijee are both skilled pilots from the Moonrace, but they fight for opposing sides in a war for control of Earth. Loran, the story’s main character, uncovers a powerful mobile suit and strives to defend Earth while hoping to find a way to end the conflict peacefully. Poe, a highly-ranked officer, pilots different machines in an effort to win back Earth for her people. Their repeated battles highlight the personal and philosophical divisions among the settlers during the war.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam 00’ (2007–2009)

In the first season of ‘Mobile Suit Gundam 00’, Howard Mason and Daryl Dodge are skilled pilots fighting for the Union forces. As part of an elite squad, they repeatedly engage in dangerous missions against the enemy’s advanced mobile suits. Howard is recognized for his strong dedication to his leader, and Daryl brings a calm, strategic approach to combat. Together, they are a reliable team, united by their commitment to duty and ability to persevere despite facing technologically superior opponents.
‘Gundam Reconguista in G’ (2014–2015)

Bellri Zenam and Steer are key members of a team that travels the world and beyond in giant robots, trying to solve a worldwide energy problem. Bellri is a gifted but inexperienced pilot who unexpectedly takes on a leadership role and has to quickly adapt to the realities of war. Steer, a seasoned pilot and navigator, manages their robot operations and provides crucial support in battles. Together, their skills are essential for the team’s survival as they journey across the planet and into space.

Dan is a resourceful player with ideas beyond just winning, while Sela is famous for her incredible speed. Though they start as rivals, they’re forced to team up and compete against other skilled players in exciting matches. Their relationship is a blend of rivalry and growing friendship as they play.
‘Macross 7’ (1994–1995)

Docker and Kinryu lead an elite squadron protecting a fleet of space colonists from strange alien attacks. They’re skilled fighter pilots, famous for their smart strategies and bold fighting style in space. When Kinryu is injured during combat, Docker takes over as commander. Throughout the story, their experience defending the fleet makes them the main line of defense for the colonists.
‘Gundam Build Fighters’ (2013–2014)

Reiji and Julian Mackenzie are skilled pilots competing in the exciting world of high-tech model combat.
