‘Carole & Tuesday’ (2019)

Carole Stanley is a central character in this touching musical series, which takes place on a transformed Mars. She’s a determined orphan working hard to achieve her dream of becoming a musician, and her strength is a key part of the story. Her friendship with Tuesday, a wealthy runaway, is a beautiful and inspiring connection that highlights the importance of art. Carole is portrayed as a strong and talented person, and her character is defined by her inner qualities, not her looks.

‘Michiko & Hatchin’ (2008–2009)

Michiko Malandro is a dynamic and captivating main character. She breaks out of a maximum-security prison on a mission to find the man she loves. While she’s not perfect – she’s often impulsive and takes risks – she feels like a real, complex person with her own strong personality and unique style. The heart of the story lies in her connection with Hatchin, a more level-headed companion, as they journey through a reimagined South American world. The series portrays Michiko with nuance, showing both her strength and her vulnerability.

‘Cannon Busters’ (2019)

Okay, let me tell you about S.A.M. – she’s the heart of this story, a seriously advanced droid who kicks off the whole adventure through this crazy, broken-down world. What I loved is that even though she’s AI, they made her a really endearing character – a young, optimistic Black woman who feels incredibly genuine. She’s teamed up with Casey Turnbuckle, a fantastic mechanic who’s just as bright and capable. And thankfully, the movie doesn’t fall into the trap of making them just sidekicks. Both S.A.M. and Casey are absolutely vital to the team, and the story really emphasizes what they can do and who they are as people – it’s a refreshing change of pace.

‘Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water’ (1990–1991)

Nadia is the central character in this exciting, ocean-going adventure directed by Hideaki Anno, and she carries a secret from her past along with a link to the famous Blue Water gem. She’s a strong-willed and ethical young woman, frequently speaking out against violence and for animal rights, which sets her apart in a world focused on technology and industry. Notably, Nadia is also considered one of the first prominent anime characters with darker skin.

‘Yasuke’ (2021)

As a film fan, I’m really intrigued by Saki. She’s this incredibly powerful young girl, but her magic is all over the place – she can’t control it! The story pairs her with Yasuke, the legendary Black samurai, and it’s fascinating watching their dynamic. Saki isn’t just a sidekick, she’s a co-lead, and she really embodies this new generation that needs someone to guide and protect them. The show does a great job of showing her journey – learning to harness her powers and finding the strength to fight what’s coming. It doesn’t treat her like a typical kid; her struggles and growth are handled with a lot of weight and sensitivity, which I appreciate.

‘Hunter x Hunter’ (2011–2014)

Canary is a young butler-in-training for the famous and dangerous Zoldyck family. Even though she doesn’t appear often, she makes a strong impression as a fiercely loyal protector who is a skilled fighter. She usually maintains a professional and serious demeanor, but shows a kind side, especially when it comes to Killua. Dressed in a formal suit, she earns respect through her fighting abilities and commitment to her job.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ (1979–1980)

Lalah Sune is a key character in the ‘Gundam’ universe and the first to demonstrate the full powers of a Newtype. She’s a deeply spiritual and understanding person who greatly impacts the lives of the series’ central characters, Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. In a place as utterly chaotic and brutal as Deadman Wonderland, she’s a surprisingly grounding and mature presence – a real stabilizing force.

Coffee is a character who appears in the ‘Mushroom Samba’ episode, working as a bounty hunter. She’s presented as a stylish and confident professional, drawing inspiration from blaxploitation films. While chasing a criminal, she drives a convertible and carries herself with a lot of swagger, easily matching the confidence of the show’s main characters. Even though she’s only in one episode, Coffee is a memorable and capable professional who isn’t afraid to take charge.

‘Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet’ (2013)

Yana lives on the Gargantia fleet and is a good friend to Amy. She’s a hardworking member of the community, always helping out with tasks around the ships. Rei Hououmaru is the dedicated and efficient secretary to the main villain, Ragyo Kiryuin.
