Kōichirō Itō, a renowned anime producer associated with numerous works by Makoto Shinkai, is currently embroiled in severe legal issues. In February 2024, he was apprehended by the police during an examination of prostitution-related allegations.
According to ANN’s report, he stands charged for attempting to bribe a 15-year-old girl with money in return for explicit images of herself. He confessed to this act, disclosing that he had engaged in similar behavior with other individuals, though the precise count remains undisclosed.
Currently, Itō stands accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior with three minors, as Japan’s legal age of consent was raised to 16 in 2023. Given this new law, these allegations are substantial. Itō has admitted guilt concerning the accusations, and the focus now shifts towards determining his sentence.
The prosecution team has proposed a sentence of six years imprisonment for Itou. However, the defense admits his wrongdoing but argues in favor of a suspended sentence instead. If granted, this would mean Itou could avoid serving time behind bars as long as he maintains good behavior during a specified duration.
According to his legal team, he has already negotiated agreements with two of the affected parties and intends to undergo therapy. They assert that these actions will help ensure no more similar behavior occurs.
On February 28, we’ll learn the court’s decision regarding the case involving someone from the production team of Makoto Shinkai’s films. Last year, Makoto Shinkai publicly expressed his feelings about this situation, saying, ‘I was taken aback by the news of the arrest of a person connected to my movies. Above all, I want to extend my heartfelt sympathies to the victims.’
