Angelina Jolie has often said she finds beauty in life’s imperfections, not in a flawless existence. In a recent interview with France Inter radio, she spoke openly about the physical and emotional marks she carries, specifically referencing her preventative double mastectomy.
Jolie explained that she’s never been attracted to the idea of a perfect, scar-free life, and instead sees her own scars as symbols of a strong, protective decision. She made the choice to have the procedure in 2013 because she wanted to be there for her children’s futures.
Having lost her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to ovarian and breast cancer at a young age, Jolie understood the pain of losing a parent. After learning she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation – which gave her a very high risk of developing breast cancer – she decided to take action.
She sees her scars as representing “the choice I made to do what I could to stay here as long as I could with my children.” Jolie reflected on raising her six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne – without their grandmother.
She believes that a long life, filled with both good and bad experiences, is what gives it meaning, and suggests that if you reach the end of your life without any scars, “you haven’t lived a full enough life.” Jolie originally shared her story in a powerful New York Times article to encourage other women to get tested for genetic predispositions to cancer and take control of their health.

I’ve noticed how much health and strength have become central to her work, especially in her new movie. In Coutures, she plays a director facing a cancer diagnosis, and she’s said it really made her think about her own life. But she also told Variety that working on such a difficult story was actually really therapeutic for her. She found a lot of support and comfort in the open and honest conversations she had with everyone involved in the film, and that shared vulnerability helped her through it.
Angelina Jolie is experiencing a fresh start both personally and professionally. She recently attended the Paris premiere of her new film, Coutures, which will be released in theaters on February 18th. The movie, a drama about the fashion world, was directed by Alice Winocour and also stars Louis Garrel, Ella Rumpf, and Anyier Anei. This role follows Jolie’s critically acclaimed performance as Maria Callas in Maria, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.
Angelina Jolie is getting back into action movies with a new thriller called Sunny, where she plays a gangster protecting her sons. She’s also working again with the director of Mr. & Mrs. Smith on a spy film, The Initiative, which should be released in 2027. In her personal life, Jolie is planning to move to Europe this July, something she’s wanted to do since her twins, Knox and Vivienne, turn eighteen.
