As a lifelong DC Universe enthusiast, I must confess that the recent developments surrounding ‘The Brave and the Bold’ have left me feeling like a kid waiting for Christmas only to find a lump of coal in my stocking. The prospect of Andy Muschietti‘s take on Batman has been a beacon of hope in these trying times, and his latest statement that the film is not happening anytime soon has sent my excitement levels plummeting faster than a Bat-signal on a rainy night.
Following James Gunn and Peter Safran assuming control over DC Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made it clear that the new DC Universe (DCU) would have a defined direction, saying, “There won’t be multiple Batmans.” A month later, Gunn and Safran unveiled their preliminary plan for the DCU, which included a film titled ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ This movie will present the official DCU version of Batman, drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s popular comic book series that ran from 2006 to 2013.
In a shift from previous reports, Ben Affleck, who donned the cape and cowl as Batman in the DC Extended Universe, will not reprise his role in future installments. On the other hand, Matt Reeves’ vision of Batman, as portrayed in ‘The Batman,’ will maintain its independence from the DC Universe and carry on under the “DC Elseworlds” tag, a label for stories that fall outside the primary DCU continuity.
In June 2023, it was revealed that Andy Muschietti, famous for helming ‘The Flash,’ is set to direct ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ His sister, Barbara Muschietti, will team up with Gunn and Safran as co-producers. This announcement represents another substantial move in molding the fresh perspective of the DC Universe.
Ever since the initial announcement, all we’ve learned about the forthcoming film is that Batman will be portrayed as older than Superman within the DC Universe. There have been frequent criticisms aimed at Gunn regarding the prolonged delay of the Batman movie in the freshly created universe.
Over a year since the initial announcement, Muschietti recently shared some insights about the upcoming film via his California Secrets Podcast, and unfortunately, it doesn’t sound promising.
Andy Muschietti has shared that ‘The Brave and the Bold’ isn’t expected to start any time soon. Instead, before diving into the Batman project, he may choose to work on a smaller movie first.

This news isn’t great for those who were excited about seeing the Batman movie in the near future.
In ‘The Brave and the Bold’, we’ll be exploring a team of superheroes linked to Batman, known as the “Bat-Family”. This series is set to present Damian Wayne, Batman’s son, as the latest iteration of Robin.
James Gunn posits that the narrative will focus on an atypical and intricate bond between Batman and his son Damian, which he terms as an “unusual father-and-son saga“. This unique dynamic is set to introduce a new emotional depth to the movie, exploring how a veteran hero like Batman manages his role as a father figure to a rebellious and exceptionally talented young crime fighter.
