Andrew Garfield Opens Up About the Movie That Always Brings Him to Tears

Andrew Garfield shared that the film In the Name of the Father always makes him cry. He told W Magazine it has a profound emotional effect on him.

He was already feeling emotional when he mentioned he couldn’t stop thinking about the film In the Name of the Father. Garfield explained that watching Daniel Day-Lewis perform felt like seeing someone repeatedly and relentlessly struggle against an impossible obstacle.

He added that the 1993 film is “compelling and upsetting and relatable and universal.”

The film In the Name of the Father is a crime drama based on the true story of Gerry Conlon, as told in his autobiography, Proved Innocent. It was directed by Jim Sheridan.

This film recounts the true story of the Guildford Four, a group of people wrongly convicted for the 1974 Guildford pub bombings, which tragically killed four soldiers and one civilian. The film features a strong cast including Daniel Day-Lewis as Gerry Conlon, alongside Pete Postlethwaite and Emma Thompson.

The movie received excellent reviews and was a commercial success, making $65 million despite only costing $13 million to produce.

The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including recognition for Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor, Pete Postlethwaite as Best Supporting Actor, Emma Thompson as Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and the prestigious Best Picture award.

Although the movie was well-received, it faced some criticism for not being completely historically accurate. Certain important events and scenes in the courtroom were made up, including conversations between Gerry and Giuseppe Conlon, and the depiction of lawyer Gareth Peirce during the trial.

I’ve heard from some of the people directly impacted by what happened, like Anne Maguire, one of the Maguire Seven, and they’ve shared their worries about how the film got things across. I remember reading an interview with her from 1994 where she was really upset about how Gerry Conlon was presented as a hero. She felt the filmmakers should have spoken to her and her family beforehand, because she believed some parts of the movie didn’t actually align with what really happened.

Even with the debates surrounding it, In the Name of the Father is still a moving and impactful film that connects with viewers today. Garfield’s appreciation shows how the film’s acting and story continue to leave a lasting impression.
