Ben Gregor is directing the movie, which updates the popular book series for today’s audiences. The screenplay was written by Simon Farnaby, who has worked on the project for years.

This film follows a family who trades their everyday life for a peaceful move to the British countryside. They soon find a mysterious tree that opens doorways to enchanting worlds, introducing them to quirky characters and unexpected adventures. The filmmakers hope to capture the heartwarming spirit of the classic books while also exploring modern issues kids face, like dealing with change and feeling anxious.

The film boasts a talented cast, including Claire Foy as Polly Thompson and Andrew Garfield as Tim Thompson. Delilah Bennett-Cardy, Billie Gadsdon, and Phoenix Laroche play the children in the family. Nicola Coughlan portrays Silky, and Nonso Anozie plays Moonface. Rounding out the cast are Jessica Gunning, Dustin Demri-Burns, and other actors who bring the tree’s unusual inhabitants to life.

The movie’s development was a bit of a journey. It originally started at StudioCanal several years ago, and when some of the initial team created Elysian Film Group, the project moved with them. In 2024, Elysian joined forces with Neal Street Productions to actively begin making the film. That year also saw the cast grow, with Rebecca Ferguson, Jennifer Saunders, and other actors joining the project.

Production started in the middle of 2024 at Shinfield Studios in Berkshire. The movie’s music will be composed by Isabella Summers, known for her work with Florence and the Machine, and she’s also writing a new song specifically for the film.

The Magic Faraway Tree is scheduled to open in the U.K. and Ireland on March 27, 2026.
