At last, the eagerly awaited second (and concluding) season of “Andor,” featuring Diego Luna as the lead character, is on its way. This season will offer insights into both Cassian Andor’s and Mon Mothma’s storylines, leading up to where we encounter them in “Rogue One.” In total, there are 12 episodes planned for this series, which is an uncommon number for a Disney+ original show, especially one as costly as “Andor.” However, instead of airing over a period of 12 weeks, Disney+ has opted for an unusual release schedule for this season. As per official Disney sources, here’s how the second season will be structured:
In simpler terms, the last season of “Andor” consists of twelve total episodes, organized into four parts or acts, where each part contains three episodes. The initial act or chapter is set to air on April 22, followed by a new chapter every week thereafter.
April 22 — E1, E2, E3
April 29 — E4, E5, E6
May 6 — E7, E8, E9
May 13 — E10, E11, E12
Essentially, fans of Star Wars will be treated to a three-hour movie each week for an entire month. Given the exceptional quality of the first season, we can expect a truly captivating experience. Interestingly, this isn’t how the show was originally planned to be released. When Collider asked Andor creator Tony Gilroy if they had always intended to release Andor season two in this manner, here’s what he shared about it:
After wrapping up the show in November, we had to eagerly anticipate Skeleton Crew. Disney made this decision, and while there’s an internal reasoning behind it, it can be challenging for podcasters who typically release a new episode each week. It’s quite intriguing though!
In essence, the reasoning behind Disney’s approach might be unclear, but there’s evidence that younger audiences prefer binge-watching over weekly releases. This preference is likely due to growing up with the binge model, popularized by streaming services such as Netflix. Streaming platforms tend to cater more to the tastes of a younger demographic, while older viewers may be accustomed to weekly episodes. Therefore, Disney+ seems to be finding a balance, similar to “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” allowing fans to binge several episodes while also prolonging the viewing experience beyond a weekend for the upcoming season of Andor. Regardless of how they release it, we’re eagerly anticipating the next installment.
