As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I must admit that the climactic episodes of Andor seamlessly knit together with the happenings of Rogue One – except for one glaring omission. Absent, in fact, was a character who holds an iconic place in the Star Wars universe: Princess Leia Organa. Remarkably, she didn’t make a single appearance, nor was she mentioned. This is quite surprising, given that her active participation in the Rebellion during Andor’s final arc would have made for compelling narrative continuity.
Interestingly, Leia’s father – Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan (played by Benjamin Bratt) – was a significant character in the final season. Intriguingly, it seems that a cameo from Carrie Fisher as General Leia was on the verge of happening. However, showrunner Tony Gilroy opted against filming it.
In an interview with ScreenRant, director Rian Johnson revealed his original plan was to include a Leia cameo during the “What a Festive Evening” episode. Bail Organa would have encountered Mon Mothma at an Investiture party, and Leia, three years prior to Star Wars: A New Hope, would have been with her father. At this point, Mon Mothma might have encouraged Leia to pursue a political career, which we know she eventually did, becoming the junior senator from Alderaan by the time we meet her in Star Wars: A New Hope. Here’s what Johnson shared about the proposed cameo:
In another version: For a hypothetical scene involving her and Mothma, if they were both 16 at the time, there were potential interesting elements. However, this idea didn’t advance beyond the initial stages, and it never reached the casting phase or became more tangible. I recall discussing it with Kathy [Kennedy] and Pablo [Hidalgo], but it never gained momentum, eventually becoming more of a hindrance than anything else.
Indeed, including Leia as a teenage senator would’ve necessitated recasting the character, as Vivien Lyra Blair, who portrayed her in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, was only 11 during filming for ‘Andor’ season two. Casting an actress of Carrie Fisher’s age for a cameo scene in ‘A New Hope’ might have been disconcerting. However, considering Leia’s significance to the saga and her connection to Bail Organa, a brief reference could have been touching. Yet, perhaps this is something that may be explored in a future Princess Leia prequel series, given Lucasfilm’s plans for such a production.
