ANDOR Recasts a Major STAR WARS Character for Season 2

In episode 6 of the second season of “Andor”, Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) encounters a well-known character from the “Star Wars” universe at a grand party, and this time, a new actor portrays the role. Previously played by Jimmy Smits in various projects, Senator Bail Organa is now acted by Benjamin Bratt (known for his roles in “Traffic” and “Coco”). Bratt’s appearance as Bail Organa in “Andor” is short, leading us to speculate that Lucasfilm might be recasting this significant role because Bratt could have a more substantial part in upcoming episodes. Given the importance of Bail Organa to the Rebel Alliance, it seems quite plausible that we’ll see him again before the series concludes.

Initially, Jimmy Smits portrayed the character of Senator from Alderaan (Bail Organa) in a minor role during Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. Later, he reappeared as Bail Organa with a more significant part in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. In this film, Bail Organa saved Master Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi following Order 66. Moreover, it was Bail Organa who adopted Leia as an infant, raising her to be a princess in Alderaan’s royal household. Scenes cut from the movie depict him organizing the initial stages of the Rebellion. Jimmy Smits reprised his role as Bail Organa in Rogue One, which chronologically follows Andor, and again in Obi-Wan Kenobi. In these appearances, we witnessed Bail Organa and Queen Breha raising Leia on Alderaan. However, Jimmy Smits chose not to reprise his role as Bail Organa in the series Andor.

Previously, Lucasfilm has swapped actors for the role of Bail Organa. Initially, Adrian Dunbar portrayed him briefly in a Senate scene from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but these scenes were later removed by George Lucas. However, you could still find Dunbar as Bail Organa in some promotional materials for the film. Jimmy Smits took over the role for Attack of the Clones. Over time, Bail Organa has been voiced by Phil LaMarr in animated series like The Clone Wars and Rebels, while Smits was absent. This indicates that more than one actor has played Bail Organa within the Star Wars universe. The intriguing point is whether Bail Organa’s appearance in Andor might imply we’ll see Leia too; only time will tell.
